General Scary petrol smell!

Hi guys,

I'm pretty much an amateur when it comes to technical car things. but i recently noticed my 97 cinquecento starting to smell of petrol when i open the window whilst driving. my mate suggested a prob with the carburetor. but i'm not sure and don't want to be driving around in a fire ball soon! the smell is worse just after i fill it up with petrol, but the car doesnt seem to be using any extra petrol than normal .please can i have some advise as i really dont wanna hav to take it into a garage

could be a faulty petrol tank i had one on my 96 cinq and it smelt every time i had more than half a tank of petrol in

Yes probably the tank leaking around the seam.
Mine went in February too.

if the rubber around ur petrol cap is fooked, u''ll smell petrol as well

Check that first just to make sure,.

Have a peep underneath at the bottom of the tank, or look for stains on the floor where you normally park it

ok,
i checked the tank it is slightly moist underneath but only a very small amount and no stains on the ground from it - so im guessing that is where the smell is coming from. do you think i should take it in or is it save to drive fro another 3 months (thats when i am buying a new car!)

You might try the recall scheme, see if you can get one for free. Phone FIAT HQ with your vin number to hand.

yeah, definitley try the recall scheme

, cinqs have been known to have petrol tank problems, usually from the seams i believe, so its a known fault

wouldn't want to drive 3 months with a leay tank though, it doesn't sound like the leak is bad, but it will probably worsen

OOoh, mine has this as well! I thought that it was something to do with the manifold / exhaust, so swapped them, it seemed to improve it, but it has gotten bad again!

Did you contact Fiat? What did they say? Have you got their number??

I had a smell... Took it to local garage and there was a leak under the bonnet as the fuel pipe had split... Cost me a tenner to repair...
