Anyone removed PAS?

Grabbed a non PAS column today from the scrappers, as i want to ditch mine due to numerous reasons.

I am keeping the rack though, as PAS cars have shorter/quicker racks on them Looks like this won't be an issue at all

Anyone done this before? Just wondering if the mounting points match up ok? Also, do you have to drill out the lock housing bolts? Looks like you do.

Cheers,

Kristian

Re: Anyone removed PAS?

I've not removed PAS before, but I have changed the steering columns and I used nothing more than mole grips to remove the tamper proof bolts

I even put them back in again, they are not very tamper proof

Hehe, Cheers Aaron, that sounds nice and easy then

Not gonna do this for a week or two i don't think, unless im bored on monday...just hope the mounts, splines, etc all match up.

Pretty excited to see the results of this "upgrade"

Re: Anyone removed PAS?

Yep the idea is:
  • Better feel
  • less weight (not by much though)
  • less/no electrical load
  • easier clutch cable changes
  • the advantage of having a faster/shorter rack compared to other non-PAS cento's, possibly at the expensive of a slightly heavier movement

I don't think the PAS really gets along with the wider and bigger wheels, heavier weight and more power up front as well to be honest.

Its not major, but has got noticeably less clear with its intention after making each of these changes. I think the tyre/wheel change made the biggest difference tbh. It sometimes over compensates and likes to wander a bit.

Hopefully after the change, it will all be lurvely

Re: Anyone removed PAS?

I've been driving on 175/50R13 wheels without pas for about 600 miles now & couldn't believe how remote the car felt with the PAS fuse installed for its MoT.

Putting 185/50R14 shod wheels on the steering was simply to heavy for easy low speed driving.

Re: Anyone removed PAS?

Give it a go. I think the wandering is most likely to be tramlining, though.

Someone posted that the top mounts are different (not got round to checking on ePer).

Shouldn't be an issue once the column is swapped for one without the motor mech etc having to be turned though

yep, I agree it may tramlining to a certain extent, but when this happens, the PAS would see this as a steering input and compound the problem further, by assisting the wheel movement. Only junking or remapping the PAS ECU to provide less assistance will be the certain way to check though

I see S4P sell two different top mounts, but i doubt there is much if any difference between them...material or roller shape are the only 2 things really.

Wonder is any cento owners fancy fitting PAS?

Cheers,

Kristian

Re: Anyone removed PAS?

Is 3.9 on PAS, 4.X?? on non-PAS.

Mine is more like 2.7 though due to my lock restrictors lol

No. tramlining is tramlining. The PAS doesn't see it at all. It's just a possible/probable feature of a lowered car on fat tyres. Blue does it less than any of my others, follwed by Orange (the PAS) car, followed by Blue 2 (lower and harder).

And location! They're the first place you normally go to change camber (and castor).

Re: Anyone removed PAS?

The top mounts on the Cinq and Mk1 Sei are hard forward in the inner wing opening, on the Mk2 Sei they're hard to the back of the opening.

Fingers it sure does increase tramlining, that's one of the reasons I put up with the inability to steer quickly at very low speed, with the PAS off I get negligible tramlining on the M11s ruts. With PAS on it tramlines more easily and harder to get out of the ruts to it tends to 'pop' out rather than drift out.
