Sub in rear door card - sei.

Hi there.

I'm starting to get back into my thought about building a bit of ICE in my car, but funds are limited for now. The Easter holidays are coming up, so I need something to do, and since the car has no problems, I might as well start wiring the sound system up.

I'm thinking of mounting an 8" sub in the left rear door card to keep the boot free.

Now, at first it will be a mock-up with a £25 8" unit, and I won't be building a sub box = it will play into the panel itself.

Would any welds or the panels themselves be in any trouble from the sound pressure?

I am aware that an 8" unit won't deliver an astounding sound pressure, but still... Also, the panels will resonate a bit, but till I figure out how big a box I can build back there, I'm going for the easy solution.

Amp will be placed in passenger footwell or under the seat.

Will end up with a full Audison/Hertz setup paired with my Pioneer DEH-P88RS headunit

Tell me what you think.

Re: Sub in rear door card - sei.

Personally i think its not the best idea.. How about make a small enclosure in front of the gearstick (under the dash).. Should be alot easier to get a reasonable size box for the sub there and sound quality will be far better. You could make the box and everything now and later when you got time/cash you can fibreglass it into a smooth encloser. Should get some pretty punchy bass there along with some custom door pods for mids and tweeters at bottom of a-pillars - could mount them in a guage pod maybe.. that would leave your rear quater panels for some speakers so you don't have to cut the parcel shelf..

Re: Sub in rear door card - sei.

I am building a new console around the hear stick to accomodate a water temp. gauge and one for oil pressure. I really don't want to use the center air vents for that, but If I have to I will.

The reason I'm going for an 8" unit is that Hertz's baby-sub only requires an 8.5-11L (just shy of 2-4 gallons, I think) box.

At the moment I already have the tweeters built into the A-pillars, a set of 4" high/mid-range speakers behind the original speaker grills and my 6.5" speakers in the parcel shelf - it had already been mutulated by the previous owner, lol. This setup would be fine for anyone not being bothered with detail coming from the back, but it sounds confusing to me. Therefore I was thinking of placing the thumper back there, rather than a set of speakers.
Though custom door cards in the front for the 4"ers sounds tempting, I'm not much for advertising any part of my setup. Hertz is a popular make for a reason and my car has already had one window smashed. Still, it would make the sound more 'right'...

I guess we'll see, then. Will try to remember to snap some pictures if I get that far and don't just go for a boot build.

Thanks for your input so far, mate.

subs in door cards..... no.

6x9's in door cards are pushing it in my opinion.

Hmmm....the idea may work. It would need careful mocking up and the bodyshell would need serious beefing up and deadening to stop resonance and to provide a solid base. Plus your sub would have to happy playing infinate baffle. You'd also have to check whether the baffle thickness may prevent the rear seats from being folded down...

Re: Sub in rear door card - sei.

Ideas are forming in my head, but they all involve building a box, lol. I know it will be quite a challenge, but as I see it there is room enough - the main challenge will be that the box needs to be able to pass through the hole, but still have volume enough.
Flexible MDF and fibreglass will help a lot. Sitting here thinking about it, my biggest problem will be supporting the bottom of the box.

I won't be doing a mock-up, yet, but Friday I'll be going through ideas with a friend of mine who's worked as an ICE-builder for a couple of years and my father (typical, ain't it?) who's built quite a few speakers in his life.

Ronnie >> Have been through your guide and must say you've done a great job. No point in putting regular speakers back there in my case, however, as rear speakers sound wrong to me. Only want to fit a sub in the left side, or nothing at all and then I'll be going for a regular boot build.
