| Re: beef it up? Easiest and cheapest sound-mod would be to glue a new air filter in the original box and then remove the front part - it sounds great, but very VERY loud, lol. I do it sometimes, just for the fun of it. Use only a couple of drops of glue in each corner of the filter itself so you're still able to remove it, of course. Use a couple of strips/zip-ties to make sure you won't lose the filter while driving. I've sealed up my filter with a thin layer of liquid gasket, rather than using glue. You will be risking a bit of dirt passing by if it isn't a tight fit. But hey, it's cheap and you can definetely hear it. :P This is more advice on sound than it's sound advice, though.

| 1242 turbo cinq! | Re: beef it up?
![]() a nice good induction kit with a good cool air feed, most kits sound awsome anyway,,,,,had a raid hp filter on my N/A cinq and that was good for sound,,,crap for heat soak so swapped it for a long induction tube away from the engine 4.5" diameter pipe! with filter on end sounds really deep and throaty

sounds very agressive and nice ha. standard air filters are partly there to quieten down the noise that the engines makes on induction

| Re: beef it up?
But you are still up on power compared to the asthamtic factory setup, whether the new kit sucks in only warm air or not. More, hotter air is better than less, cool air. And it's not like the air is 200ºC when you're driving along, anyway. The main problem is a potential loss of low-end power as you reduce the inlet length, but the Centos aren't exactly torquey, lol. The Novitec/Merkur/whatever carbon boxes that fit to the original filter are great and add loads of roar, though a bit less than any open filter setup. I have one and I'm not parting with it. ![]() I will bet you all this much; removing the front of the original box and glueing a filter in place is as effective as fitting a K&N kit without the cold air feed. And the cheap mod sounds A LOT better! ![]() So, remove the front of the box and fit a cold air feed and you're doing better than the K&N fan-boys, lol. Could be fun to punch a hole in the bonnet and raise the original air box, though. American style wanna-be blower look, lol, though don't drive in the rain or snow.

| TruBlu | Re: beef it up? What Hansen DK is saying does makes sense to some extent, the point that people are making is that you'll be drawing in hot air that way because its just above the engine and in particular the exhause manifold. Hot air = less density = less oxygen = smaller bang. But yes there will be more air total i suppose. I would guess that air filter won't last as long either exposed as it would be. Having drilled my airbox on my old seicento i can confirm that the induction noise is increased quite satisfyingly but it makes no difference to power/performance but thats not what you sound like your after. I would do one of two different things if i was you (on the cheap options): 1: Replace panel filter with aftermarket one, everyone seems to have their favourite, then drill the airbox - to do this what you want to do is take the bit off the front (infront of air filter) and drill some holes in it, you want the holes on the top really as this is as far away from the hot air as possible. you can do lots of small holes or a few bigger ones, makes no difference just whichever you think will look better. crap pic but you can see the holes 2. Again replace standard panel filter with aftermarket one, then cut the pipe on the front right off (looking from the front) and enlarge the hole that it remaining, then mock up some piping to fit it and run it to some cold air. The 2nd option is probably better but is more of a faff. Add to that a 2nd hand aftermarket exhaust and you should be quite roarty

| Re: beef it up? Blu73 >> I doubt there's any difference for the filter's life, whether it's an aftermarket that fits the 'open' factory box-mod or one you bolt on somewhere else in the engine bay. A paper filter may suffer, but on the other hand you can buy quite a few paper filters for the price of one from K&N. For a temporary mod, it just doesn't get any cheaper. Or better IMO. ![]() Driving w/o the front panel will allow more air to flow that way. The holes in your old filter panel won't make much of a difference as they aren't that big. But removing the panel itself makes a noticable difference on my Sei. The ECU has been remapped, though. That may have more of an impact than I thought.
