Engine running probs 899cc sx

Hi everyone, this morning and again this afternoon my cinque tickover has increased to (guessing 1500 2000 rpm) and then slowly dropped down to normal and just as i got home it stated reving up again to perhaps 3000 rpm, i turned of the ignition and then back on again and it wouldnt start after about a minute it started but was running on what sounded like 2 cylinders with a very strong smell of fumes/petrol i reved it a few times and stopped and started it and it gradually cleared in about a minute and was then running back to normal again iwas convinced that i had a petrol leak but it appears dry under the bonnet and no pipes seemed to have dropped of the injection unit etc. and the visable ecu plugs seem secure and dry.
If anybody has any idea what this might be or has previously sorted this out i would appreciate the help.
Is this just a case of severe rain over night seeped in to a elec. plug somewhere shorting out a critical value?
any help is greatly appreciated thanx heli_red:D

Start by having a look at the map sensor. Remove the pipe and blow it out. If that doesn't help, it could be the lambda.

Cheers

Look at the ECU, to the left is a black/grey box upside down, look under this and there is a pipe coming from it. Carefully take the pipe off and the same to the front of the engine. Give it a very hard blow as oil may/will come out of it. And then refit.

Hi gang checked the pipe it was dry and not blocked allthough hard to blow through but i persume that is because it is a small pipe that is quite long!! when the engine was running disconecting it changed the revs slightly and there was a strong vacumn on the pipe, i persume this is normal?
struggling to start sometimes then runs really badly until you have revved it a bit and smells really strong with petrol sometimes when driving along and you put your foot down the engine has absolutely no power to give and sort of feels like it is makeing it slowdown then a few seconds later it is ok also i have done about 80 miles on a quarter of a tank of petrol although i only use the car for short journeys which are always in traffic and i am very heavy footed not sure if this is usual fuel consumption or not.
Thanxs for reading any help or advice is appreciated Heli_red

Well from saturday onwards it has been back to its normal self of the warning light coming on now and again but starting and running ok, so i will put the experience down to rain in a conector somewhere, but would anybody have any ideas which one would cause these symptoms as i cant find anything obvious?
thanks for any help

The strong smell of petrol could be fuel leaking from the filler cap, see this thread:

My Cinqy gets stinky if I give her more than half a tank!

Could be a problem with the water temp sensor, if the ecu thinks the engine is cold it'll up the idle speed and bang more fuel in.
