I have just bought a replacement head today, due to my original failing [see my other thread elsewhere]

My original head has a "thatched" casting:

My replacement is plain:

I also note, that my replacement head looks like it has been mildly ported, it had a metal gasket still attached to the inlet side, my original head inlet ports are approx 25mm tall, on this one, they are almost 30mm tall, and really smooth inside, pics of the same port on both heads:

While I am on, can anyone identify this cam - I dont know anything about cams so it could just be a standard one, it has a green band around it between two of the lobes, and the number "176" printed into another area between the lobes:

There is evidence that the head has been skimmed, although by comparing the two its only been done very lightly, I can see the marks left by the machining process

The 176 cam is a standard 1108 item.

The 176 cam is a standard 1108 item.

Good, I am glad about that, I am not interested in fitting non standard parts, prefer to keep things standard, usually more reliable that way. [says he whose h/g has gone taking the head with it]

Yeah, sorry about the pics being wrong way up!! photgraphy isnt one of my strongpoints!! lol

I think the difference in capacity comes from the stroke, the block is 10mm taller. I don't have a Punto book to check, though.

Cheers

D

1242 is 70.8 bore, 78.9 stroke
1108 is 70.0 bore, 72 stroke

So, most of the difference is stroke: the 1242 bore is, off the top of my head, about 0.4mm over the max overbore of the 1108.

I'd guess the pistons are pretty different, or they'd not have done it that way................

hello i have just read the threads but i may of read it wrong but isn't the 1242 head different to the 1108 head i.e the inlet port on the 1242 is position differently and the punto 1242 head has a mpi system.
please correct me if i am wrong which i am sure you will.

Ricky

Are you about to fit a 1242 head on an 1100 block, using 1100cc crank, rod and pistons?

Do you know what you're doing...?

is that to me? My head must be 1108 as I bought 1108 head gasket kit and the inlet gasket fits perfect, as does the inlet manifold

weather permitting, refitting starts tomorrow
