Question Overheating Sporting

Got a Cinq Sporting that after a really cold morning started to overhead.

I think the cold temperature that night caused something to break, like the thermostat freezing caused it to get stuck in closed position...

If I run it:
It easily gets up above 110degrees, with no fan kickin in...

If I leave it on idle:
It easily gets up above 110degrees, with no fan kickin in...

Checklist:
* - There is enought water in the expansion tank (no leak).
* - The water in the expansion tank gets really hot.
* - The incar fan blows really hot air when the engine is on but just cold air
when the engine is off (waterpump working I guess?)
* - Oil looks good (headgasket not blown?)
* - Idle Vs. Driving fast makes no difference, (guess the water is not passing the radiator)

Assumption, thermostat stuck in closed position?

Or could it be something else?

( I have never heard/seen the fan moving, not sure it ever has worked soo I don't think that's part of the problem )

Re: Overheating Sporting

I don't think the radiator gets hot but I've not been able to actually verify it yet, I'll check it after work..

If we assume the radiator is cool, it more or less must be the thermostat that's broken?

The thermostat is under the coil pack, follow that pipe to the rad and check for hotness.

If no hotness, then thermostat is the main culprit.

Re: Overheating Sporting

Swapped the thermostat during the lunchbreak today and let it run on idle for some some 30-40 mins(I know, global warming yadayada..its cold in Sweden anyway) and it stayed at 90-100degrees.

It still a little hot but I guess that's due to the fan not working, or atleast I think it's not working. Never seen or heard it move..

I'll try to locate the fan problem this weekend, anyone have any good ideas on "known fan failing reasons"?

Re: Overheating Sporting

my sporting punto kept overheating...just on short trips too!

i checked my radiator and it was cold - obviously the water wasnt going through it...there must have been a block!

i flushed it out using a hose pipe and now it seems to be ok

hope this helps!

Re: Overheating Sporting

Hi there

I had this problem about a week or so ago, the rad had frozen, the water in the header tank was hot and the heater was warm.

The car did have anti-freeze in but obviously not enough as i drained it and put the proper mixture in and i have had no problems since.

Cheers Nick
