problem, sounds & idle

Went down the motorway last night, came of near home, parked it up for the night, got in it this morning turned the key and its idling like a shake and vack sometimes, and is very off, ie very bad idle in first gear and its sounding like a trackor(tappits?), to get my car to run right i have to realy gun the gas pedal etc???

what could have caused it??

Its had a new head gasket, map senor, plugs in the last month so I hope its non of the them??

It is not over heating etc, but a little bit of smoke came out the back this morning??(white) but other than that it drives find, I also heard a hissing from the back near the petrol tank?? maybe??

The white smoke will be steam, rough running probably caused by water in one of the cylinders.

Bad news - Head gasket is goosed.

Fix It Again Tony!
Would swap for X19, Montecarlo Spider or GT.i.e in average/poor condition! Scottish based would be nice.

sounds like its running on 3 too me, probly a faulty coil.
you should check for a spark on the end of each plug lead for a start.
thats probly just steam in your exhaust, since hot water is the one of the main bi-products of combustion you tend too get alot of steam on a cold start because of the rich mixture, and the hiss is the fuel pump most likly; not a problem.

Check that the map sensor pipe is clear and connected.

Pete.

I have a version of this problem - I get erratic idling soon after starting. The haynes manual has a trouble shooting section on erratic idling so that might be a place to start.

In my case the ECU recorded intermittent faults on two sensors, the temperature sensor and crankshaft rpm sensor.

I'm only speculating but I understand the temperature sensor is involved when the car is cold starting - to avoid engine cut outs in the first few minutes after starting the car runs a richer fuel mix based on feedback from the temperature sensor. It seems reasonable that if the sensor is intermittently faulty that the fuel mix will not always be what it should be

Similarly for rpm sensor, car is trying to idle at 8000 rpm and if there's a fault on the sensor it may think it needs to up the revs to avoid cutting out
