Track rod end

The 1242cc saga continues!!

Not much more to do - connect zorst manifold and downpipe, do OS track rod end, slap the wheels on, fill all fluids then test the bastard.

Prob is simple, I cant get my OS track rod end back in.

I take its just a case of smashing the TRE with a hammer until its securely seated in the housing, so yu can do up the nut!

Ive tried a lot, but dont seem to really be getting anywhere, each time i turn the spanner on the nut, the balljoint pops back out of its housing! It isnt splined is it?

1242cc Engine in car, not wired up, need new inlet manifold!!, boot delock soon, K+N still in garage!

You can use fine wet and dry on it and its seat just enough to give it a bit of grip,

Try cleaning the thread on the track rod end to minimise the drag from the nut.

Pete.

Certainly not bash it. A constant upwards pressure on the bottom of the TRE, usually a long pry bar. Being right handed the pry bar is on my left shoulder leaving the right hand to tighten the bolt. Quick movements with a spanner can also help

Cheers

A million apologies.

I have been working on cars other than cinqs, where the TRE gose in from the bottom (ooerr missus)

Of course, the Cinq TRE goes in from the top, duh.

Therefore downward pressure on the top of the TRE. I used a jack handle and put the open end over the unused rearward facing brake pipe mount and leant on it as I tightened.

Sorry to confuse.

Cheers

Hmm..well, I still cant get it in!

Ive tried the constant pressure method (someone standing on the TRE), but the nut just isnt budging!

Ive sprayed it with WD40 in the hope that may help and left it over night, but i get the inpression it wont, any better ideas?

Take all the WD40 off, use IPA or similar, run a die down the thread on the ball joint to clean it. Emery cloth the upright and the taper, no lubricant any where near it, then away you go.

Cheers

As a last resort, if that doesn't work try cutting a small slot in the end of the stud, hold that with a stout screwdriver and use a spanner on the nut.

Pete.

Well, I ended up last resorting in a bit more of an overkill way- angle grinding the nut.

Its off- id say it was the nylon insert in the nut causing the problems

Ah.
That'll be the Nylok then - it's supposed to stop it shaking loose.

Hmm. Ive got two flats on the TRE, but theres thread thats been unaffected by the grinder. Ive tried an M10 size nut- the only available that Id thought would fit (Was thinking M9 or M10), and the TRE appears to be taking the thread off the nut. Ideas? Or is it a replace the TRE job?
