Re: Blu's Turbo Re-shell Thread

Question:
So as the engine is about to drop and am organising people to come give me a hand.. I need to know what bits that i'm gonna need to buy new (for dropping the engine in). I know that the hubnut for example will need replacing when they come off but what about the driveshafts, they are gonna have to come off both cars, so what do i need (if anything) for this? Obviously gonna need new gearbox oil but is there any nuts or gaskets or anything that need to be replaced when putting it all back together?

Re: Blu's Turbo Re-shell Thread

Driveshaft oil seals? Quite often they get damaged and the new oil you put in will just leak out. It is possible -- one of the engine swap threads talks about this -- to just split one of the CV joints, but I've never done it that way. You're supposed to replace all the nylocks, too.

Re: Blu's Turbo Re-shell Thread

i would, as fingers has mentioned, split the CV boots and leave the dif cups in place. This would mean it's not going to leak any oil out the box, nor will you disturb any seals. Just make sure you don't get any crap on the tripod / in the joint.

Re: Blu's Turbo Re-shell Thread

Well I've been a bit busy (got some work, YAY!) and also a bit lazy recently (at the weekends)..

I'm at swapping the looms over at the mo and i'm thinking to myself, what is the difference in the looms (engine bay bit) exactly. I mean obviously with the 899 and 1108 engines being different then some of the connections reach different lengths, but i was just wondering whats on the 1108 loom thats not on the 899 one and/or vice versa??

Also why i'm at it, i've briefly looked at the loom on the new shell and i see that it goes through the bulk-head kinda behind the wiper motor. Is it even possible to get it out without removing the dash? And i came across these connectors inside, just under the dash right over on the passenger side behind a plastice cover, loads of wires connecting (iirc) via 1 yellow, 1 brown and 1 black. Is that where the loom from the engine meets the interior wiring??

Intend to get stuck in this weekend providing the quick service to the new runabout goes smoothly.

Re: Blu's Turbo Re-shell Thread

i just chopped into my old 899cc loom theres only like 8 wires or so to change, and just extent the oil pressure grey/yellow wire and the reverse sensor wires (red/blue/ bluexwhite i think)

the only ones that go to the inside of the car are the warning lights e.g... water temp, inlet water temp and few others like

Re: Blu's Turbo Re-shell Thread

So technically, theres nout to stop me from leaving the 899 loom there and just adapting it?? When you say about 8 wires need changing, do you mean that they just need the length adjusting or is there more to it? ie. is there any that need adding in completely or are all the connections there already just in wrong place?

hope that makes sense!!

Reason i ask is the loom on the turbo is quite damaged from heat coming from boost piping etc (remembering that my boost pipes are different to everyone elses due to the different IC) theres a large section that was inbetween a load of boost pipes and much of the plastic covering has been burnt away and some wires are little damaged to. So thinking if i can get away with using the existing loom then all the better, especially as i intend to re-route some of them a different way around the bay to keep them as far away as possible to all the heat generating bits..

I tell you the more i look at this car, the more i'm amazed it never went seriously wrong in the past. Some of you may know that it has been over-boosting, upto 20psi at times. Well that was because (bear with me here, not sure on correct names for some stuff) the pipe with the boost adjuster on was a bit cracked around the ends and held on with cable tie So new pipes and proper clips should fix.
And the oil leak that it had was because the oil return from the turbo to the sump was just pushed on at both ends without jubilee clips or anything. So lucky that didn't fall off!!

The upside is most of these things will be sorted when its back together. Which shouldn't take long once wires are sorted. Not really got much to change, just the new clutch to go on and the oil cooler setup. Really want a larger bore exhaust to go on as well but think that'll have to wait for me to save some cash.
