completly different but alot easier.

sorry i never did one for the back [8)] i never took photos whilst doing it.

I'll give u a quick quide -

Put the rear of the car on axel stands and remove the wheels (you dont have to but it makes things easier). Put the radio on (cant forget that! :p). Take the jack and jack it up under the rear arm you are doing first (the bit that each wheel is attatched to). jack up the arm so it is actually resting on the jack. Undo the lower bolt on the shock absorber and remove it. Now, with the rear arm resting on it, slowly lower the jack until you can take out the spring (just pulls out). put in the new spring and make sure it sits nicely in the grooves. jack up the rear arm and put the bolt for the shock back in and tighten. DONE! repeat on the other side and thats it. pretty simple.

If your changing the shocks aswell, just remove the bolt and the bottom and the bolt at the top and change it at the same time.

If you dont have axel stands then you will need to borrow a jack off someone so that you have 2. However I dont recomend getting under a car supported only by a jack, plus you will have to do 1 side at a time which will take longer :p

How hard is the lower bolt on the shock meant to be? Me and my friend tried undoing it today and we couldnt manage to get it off... We had to give up in the end, it would only turn a tiny but and even to do that we had to use all our strength - using long wrenches...

Also, which way up does the spring go? Is it with the more compressed coils at the top or bottom?

no need to use a jack to compress the springs, just get tough guy Pete to force it!![8D]

I wish I'd got a pic of his face while doing that. Cool and calm[8D]

Oh, it can take some effort, borrowed a 18" breaker bar and 3ft scaffold tube to undo the bolts on my 899cc.

Then it was easy:)

We tried the WD40, it went a little way but seem to get jammed on the last bit of the thread...

Ok. WD 40 is a water dispersant, hence the initials.

You need a penetrating oil, like duck oil. Just grab a duck and squeeze.

If there is a lump of crap on the protruding end of the thread, apply wire brush, no dettol, to thread. If the bolt goes tight as you are uwinding it, tighten it back up a bit and remove the piece of crud that is stopping it coming out.

If you force the bolt out, you will either damage the thread or rip the head off.

Either option causes prroblems with reassembly.

Best practice is to apply the penetraing oil well in advance of doing the job.

End of lecture.

cheers

Take the rubber top seat out, line it up on the spring, pull the arm down and shove it back on. Simply heave the bottom end of the spring back into the seat - making sure you've lined the end of the spring up with the notch in the base.
Refit shocker and job's a teacake.

Pete.
