hi last night i drove threw town (20-30mph) as suddenly the car rev to the limits and made a real horrible noise (crunchy-type ticking) so i switched it off and free rolled it to a stop.

now the first thought was cam-belt has snapped or jumped (never had it happen before) but thats what it sounded like
any way i look under the engine to see the cam-belt was still attached to bottom pulley and tightly as it should be,so checked round to find no fault, so i thought what the hell, lets start it.

only to find it was locked solid just clunked and no more (remember its 12:30am in the morning no1 around) as i had to ring a mate to tow it home.

anyway today i took it apart cam-belt all OK, but one of the valves (i think it was no.2 valve on cyl 4) its the one on far side near coil packs was pushed up so when i took it our all i had was the rod the end must be inside the cylinder, but I'm hoping when i take the head off it wont have cause a lot of damage so i can get it repaired.:(

now this car is a 2001 fiat seicento sporting with 90,000miles (yes very high) but everything was spot on apart from a bit of tapping on head but this was like this when i bought it a year ago from a fiat garage with just under 60,000 miles on clock,

so has anyone else heard of this happening and whats the likely hood of major damage, as tis car us my life i have had a lot of problems with this car but i just love it too much to get rid, and when its was running it was great, and for the miles it had on was very nippy in fact it up-en till this day did the clock every-time i wanted it to (privet roads of course(y) )

Re: Fiat Seicento Sporthing 2001 Dropped Valve

I would expect the worst I am afraid. If the motor was revving hard and the valve head broke free it may easily have damaged the head/piston even the cylinder wall. I hope I am wrong but it does not sound good...

Re: Fiat Seicento Sporthing 2001 Dropped Valve

the only way to tell for sure is to strip it down but i would't be suprised if there is damage.

Never mind though you can always do an engine swop you can put a motor in for not that much money if you do it yourself you could even make it 1242 be good for another 90K miles then

Re: Fiat Seicento Sporthing 2001 Dropped Valve

thats a few bit of driving you've done in it. 30,000 in one year, and taking it off the clock at time couldn't of done it good.

Piccy's....we want piccy's.

I recon the vavles will be bent up inside the conbustion chamber, with damaged bores, head and maybe piston:( :( :(

Re: Fiat Seicento Sporthing 2001 Dropped Valve

Being honest, I've never seen a drop valve that didn't require some serious work to fix and with these little engines being so cheap unless your lucky it'll be cheaper to buy a lower mileage example of the engine and fit that.

Re: Fiat Seicento Sporthing 2001 Dropped Valve

well ive just got head off and well i think im in for good luck (about time)
the head has escaped major damage a very small chip on valve seat (aparently its savable due to bigger valves being fitted) i'll try to get pics of the head before it goes to shop tomoz

but the piston had a chip out of it (see pic)
the piston looks worse then what it is i was scraping the black coating off im going to clean them,

anyway its saveable the lad whos doing it is going to scim the head to the max (is this a good what affect would it have on power of car) and scim the piston and polish it up and he says its ok (what do you think should i change them all)

as for the rest of the engine cam is aparently in very very good conditon for the life its had and that goes for the rest of engine
so im getting the full works on the head so no more tapping:D

==================
the chip is about 1cm by 1cm and no more then 2mm deep and no damage at all to the barrel, i must had switched the car off just in time (unlike some people who will keep it going untill it stopped as ive seen that done with a nice hole in engine)

(i only cut back cause this car had high miles to start with

Re: Fiat Seicento Sporthing 2001 Dropped Valve

does anybody know of a company that could do an engine swap for me from my 1108cc to the 1242 8v? preferably in the south wales area?

Re: Fiat Seicento Sporthing 2001 Dropped Valve

i guess i could get help from my friends like. but i need to get hold of an engine firstly
lol. is the 16v harder to do than the 8 then?

Re: Fiat Seicento Sporthing 2001 Dropped Valve

will do. lol. well im between getin the 1.2 8v or just highly modifying the 1108 at the mo. not to sure. i have acces to all the equipment id need. just im on the fence so to say.

I'd look for a low mileage replacement engine.

Re: Fiat Seicento Sporthing 2001 Dropped Valve

well i have just been informed about the price to get work done and its going to cost £260 all in , a bit expencive but im getting it done anyway , ive been to look (just look) at the new panda 100hp , great car, and fiat are offering me around £850 trade in wich isent bad (cars in very good condition ) they said they would offer me more but its the miles (yes they do know about the problem and are fine.
now i know most people have put the side-skirts and spoilers on but it seems to have help me with fiat, seen as there the standard extras (bought seperetly) it hasent de valued it (i think when i get new car im going to do a very very lot less miles lol

Re: Fiat Seicento Sporthing 2001 Dropped Valve

never realy thought of that, this panda isnt bran-spankin new its ex-dem car (56 reg) with 3,000miles on clock but i am intending to see what the best price i can get for ma car, this panda is £8500 and im not intending to pay that im expecting, somthing around £7,000 plus trade in, lol, when i bought my on Sei it was on fourcort for £3000 and i offered £1000 bought as seen lol he wasent pleased, but i got it for just under £2000

UPDATE (thought id start on here to save starting me post)

after i got all the head rebuilt it was great for 4 days then it started to tick like it needed set up now im not sure if it just wants set up again but im going back with it to the garage to get sorted , anyway it needed a new cambelt (just to be safe) but yep but (its always a but with this car) we (me and a mate the garage owner that is) looked at the timing before we took the old cam belt off and notices it had moed a tooth (dont know if it was foward or backwards (might have been a previous mistake)

but the car run great with no problems but we realigned it all up and fitted new cambelt and when i started it it sound ok ran a bit rough on tik over so we tripple cheaked and it was ok so i decided to take for a spin, only to find it was very under powered (it was very very sharp on pick-up) but it was as if it was on 1 pot very dead (it sounded ok ish)

the sound was as usual but quit loud like as if i took my full air box off or as though it was over fueling (like flooding type sound) if your not sure take ya filter out and listern as you put ya foot down it the engine tone not the air passing.

then i noticed the ecu light started to flash (its been on since 2 week ago but ran fine perfect infact) now i know what the flash means im damaging my cat lol so i was woundering if i have timed it up correct is it due to having head skimmed should i try to advance or retard timing by the one tooth to see how it goes

also if you take your air box of and hit the limits  (you hear the popping sound from engine) that what mine sounds like now if i hit the limits just not as loud

my machanic is convinced its not the timing (im having dowts on his skills:bang: ) and thinks its a sensor but thats the only thing we have changed before it happened infact id took it for a spin just before we changed it (and only took a max of 30mins to change due to be having inner weel arch out for wax oiling)

sorry to keep going on and giving life story just thought it would help better to understand
