My dad brought some 10w40 for his TDI Passat, except he picked magnatec petrol as he looked at my bottle in the garage. He went and got some proper TDI spec oil so i'm now left with a nearly full 10w40 magnatec.

Got an oil change coming up and i've been running 15w40. Any harm in using this (free) 10w40 for 5,000miles / year until the next filter and oil?

As for the car's use. Always warmed up. Thrashed to death once past 70 degrees.

No problems

In terms of a cento 10w 40 is said to be for SPI and 15w 40 is said to be for MPI IIRC. It may be the other way round

However many others have alternated and seen no problems

Says 15W40 in my Cinq owner's manual, but plenty of instances where 10W40 has been used no probs :)

There was a good article about oil in fast car a couple of months back. The first number is the viscocity of the oil when it is cold. The lower the number the easier it is for the oil to flow round the engine when it is cold. This means that the oil will get from the sump to the top of the engine quicker. Therefore the engine is lubricated properly that bit quicker.

is it fully synthetic or mineral?

as for 10w40 or 15w40 usually its 10w40 but if engine older and high mileage i would say 15w40 as its slightly thicker.

also i think modern volkswagons use 5w40 dont quote me on that though!

i have just been using part synthetic from halfords,

Iam using this one, (halfords 15W-40, semi), but in this country there's no halfords:mad: and in two shops i'w been they dont have such oil-only mineral 15W-40. Semi synthetic is cheapest one 10W-40 - is it fine to use this?? what about mineral oil is it allright to use it for change???
