thinking it may be handy to have a list of sensor etc faults that do or do not cause the EM light to come on when faulty/disconnected?

Flashing means its a soft error and that it isnt constant (like a misfire at 5k).
If a soft error occurs 3 times in a short space of time then it goes into the memory as a fault and the light stays on.
Most common ones I have found are random misfire and lambda sensor.
Seicento MPI's are euro 2 compatible and have OBD2 connectors to plug into.

You can buy the lead to plug into a laptop from ebay for about £30? Search for OBD2 PW2000 compatible, best to get a serial lead, this is what all the software is compatible with, you can get a USB one but need a Serial emulator which not all software works with.
Cinqs and seis with 3 pin connectors (spi) are OBD which I haven't yet had a chance to play with, I have the lead but no software and haven't got round to playing. Again from ebay.
As for a list of codes, there are alot and can be seen at http://www.obd-codes.com/ if you know what the code is from a basic scanner otherwise the free software above tells you anyway.
