| Get a wriggle on! | Re: Cinquecento Sporting Water Pump Replacement I just replaced the water pump and timing belt on a Punto 55 which has the same engine as the Sporting and your write up helped a lot. But I have some questions with the following which I would like you to reply to! Thanks!! How did you do this? I turned the engine many times but never managed to get the lines on the cam belt to line up with the mark on the sprocket and the the mark on the head??? Could you please explain better? When I took it all apart, the lines were almost lined up anyway, however when I put it all back together I used the lines to line up the belt, then after a few turns of the engine you want to be looking for the timing marks on the pulleys to line up in the same place as you set them. You may have to turn it more to get the belt lines to come back into place. I think the belt lines are just there for initial setting as a guide. I found mine to be out 4 teeth!!! Is this something common when the water pump/bearing fails??? I found the cam belt to be very slack in fact, so I suspected that the belt slipped! Could this be? I doubt they slip due to the water pump failing, chances are the last person to give the belt attention didnt take care in getting it right, OR that the belt has slipped / jumped at high revs due to its slackness - more probable. Remember that was my first ever Fiat water pump change, so perhaps other users may know more.

| Re: Cinquecento Sporting Water Pump Replacement I've just done mine. Rather than take the timing belt off, I wedged it in place with cloths. I did undo the tensioner to give me some slack which I carefully moved to around the water pump pulley by turning the crank. This gave me plenty of room to manouevre the old pump off and get the new one in.

That is a core plug, if yours is holed [could be rusty] you will need a new one, they arent worth trying to repair, dont take the old one out until you get a new one and are satisfied its the right size.
