Temperature Gauge Fitment
For Cars Without Temperature Gauges
Published by kritip
04-12-2006
Introduction

As many people will be aware certain model Seicento's and possibly some Cinquecento's do not come with a temperature gauge of any description. Instead they are fitted with a temperature warning light, or as I like to call it, "Oh Crap" Light.

The temperature warning light will only come on at extreme temperatures, as I know from experience. At this time the coolant will be boiling and will start to blow steam out of the pressurised cap, not really ideal, as by this point you risk serious engine damage.

To remedy this situation I set about fitting a temperature gauge to my car, which has been running for over a month as I write this article and has been working fine and providing a talking piece and most importantly, an accurate temperature read out.

Exclamation Re: Temperature Gauge Fitment

Having just done this sucessfully on a Sei MPi :-) , you need the blue wire for ignition controlled +, black for negative. In case you need seperate illumination when dark, the Red & yellow is + & is on only with the lights.

Hopefully if you follow these colours with the battery out you'll avoid a £35 airbag warning reset (thanks Research Nuneaton - Research Coventry tried charging £60 + VAT) Be careful to do the wiring work with the battery out - I originally shorted connections while doing a crap job of testing the outputs with a multimeter!!! :-(

Don't want to spam the guide, but for people's info it only cost me £15 in the end to get the reset done today by RESEARCH Nuneaton & I was wrong about Coventry London Road being a RESEARCH garage :-)

Re: Temperature Gauge Fitment

the whole process of having no reading till the thermo opens can be bypassed by instead of placing the sensor in the bottom hose, you get a smaller sized adaptor and put it in the pipe which runs from the block to the heater matrix at the rear of the engine. that way the water runs past the sensor even when its warming up and still gives a very reliable reading as the sensor is nearer to the engine block!

I know that a constant reading has its benefits, but I actually quite like the idea that I don't get a reading while the stat is closed - I find it a handy reminder not to push the engine until the car is warm!!!

Also means I know if it is sticking.

Re: Temperature Gauge Fitment

Yes, I think you may be right!

I'll go for the one described in the guide!

Cheers

Just out of interest what sort of price do you reckon the whole thing would cost?
