Make your stereo turn on and off with the ignition

A little tip for sei owners mainly but could easily be adapted for many fiats.

I've seen it written on here that to get a stereo working in a sei (as well as other fiats) that what everyone does is to join the red and yellow wires together. This means that the ignition feed for the stereo is now a constant feed, this means that the stereo will remain on even if the ignition is off. Not Ideal.

What i did, which is the simples way to do it, is to remove one of the electric window switches, on the back of the switch you will see 4 wires. One is larger that all the others. If you splice a cable onto this wire (which only provides power when the ignition is on...). When i say splice you could either cut and connecting block it together, use the blue clips which you can get from any autofactor or solder and heatshrink the cables together. when you have the cables 'spliced', connect this to the red wire and connect the yellow wire to the loom as normal.

This will mean that the stereo will come on and off with the ignition (as it should). If you car does not have electric windows, you should be able to take a feed from the back of the cigarette lighter also. Infact anything which doesn't work unless the ignition is on.

Doing it this way is a simple fix and will mean that you don't risk running your battery down by leaving the stereo on accidentaly.

The red wire doesn't draw much current at all. I think it's less that 5mA. It's just a signal to the stereo if the ignition is on or not so you won't have to uprate any fuses either.

I've done this to mine and have had no probelms whatsoever. It's easier that playing around taking a switched feed from the fuse box etc.

It's also neater that bodging 2 wires together that weren't intended to be joined together.

Thanks. Hope this helps.

Re: Make your stereo turn on and off with the ignition

Thank you friend! I was just about to pull apart the steering column to get to the wiring for the ignition but your idea is much much MUCH easier and better
Cheers for such a simple way of doing this.

As a pointer for anyone wanting to try this, on my Cinq the switched ignition wire is brown/white trace.

Re: Make your stereo turn on and off with the ignition

I've just followed this guide - 'cos my battery was constantly draining and this seemed to be the cause - but even with the ignition off the head still switches on. The wire I used (which was the largest) was pink with a yellow stripe (this is in an X reg Sei btw) ...

Ignore me - I was being a tit, forgot there was always going to be a constant feed for the memory but that that would have a much lower draw. So yay! No more flat battery!

Re: Make your stereo turn on and off with the ignition

just thought id add to this, on a cinq you can wire the remote+ wire to the headlight switch. you want the white wire, that also has a looped red wire going from one prong to another (may sound confusing but pop the switch out and all will be clear

Talking Re: Make your stereo turn on and off with the ignition

Hi Slippy,

I know it's an old one... However thanks a lot! I started in a Sei Sporting about 10 years ago, and last week bought another one. I unfortunately had to sell the first one, but now I needed a second car, result; another Sei Sporting, yellow of course! When I bought the first one I already hated to turn the radio off myself. I have just done your "tip" and I'm very happy! Thanks!

Will this make the head unit light up/dim down when you switch the headlights on? My head unit used to dim when the headlights were turned on in my other cars (Ford Fiesta and a Citroen AX).

Re: Make your stereo turn on and off with the ignition

Hiya Boys and Girls,

I've just bought a 97 Cinquecento and after stripping out the botch job of 6x9's on the back shelf and the offending wiring I noticed the splice from the electric window switch.

My problem is this: I installed the new stereo, but when I knock the ingnition off the the stereo loses all its settings.

There are two yellow wires spliced to a single cable from the iso block to the electric windows. The other ends of the yellow cable are terminated.

Should these two terminated ends be reattached to the two yellows which are sliced to the electric windows?

Any help would be awesome!

Re: Make your stereo turn on and off with the ignition

Just a quick question, I'm a complete newbie to the world of fiats with a '01 sei sporting... lovely little machine but having this problem with the radio... mine stays on as there seems to be no accessory line to the radio, but why does the loom supply 2 constant power feeds? neither switch off with ignition but the loom doesn't look modified??? do i need to remove the connection with should be switched, completely? I was thinking that I could make a new cable with connector pin on and use and empty bank on the loom connector and then swap the pin of the acc line at the harness adapter to the relevant bank for the switched line??

I'm not sure I get this bit, do you mean that the bigger wire from the window switch is yellow and that just needs to be put back how it was with the addition of the red wire from the radio connecting to it?
