Brake Woes

All righty. I have now got my Oz super turismo WRC's onto my Sei after 3 weeks of probs trying to get them to fit properly.

Since then i have been experiencing a horrible judder through the brake pedal when i apply the brakes. It is only really noticeable above 40mph but drive bare footed and you can feel it there the every time.

The disks and pads are less than 1year/7000miles old (Red Dots) and the problem was not there when i took the car off the road three weeks ago. I have checked the trueness of the front disks and they seem fine. I have also checked that the drums are mounted straight and they too seem fine.

Anyone any ideas?

Re: Brake Woes

Ghost had this, I think it's due to using non hubcentric spacers.

Re: Brake Woes

Hi,
Try getting the tracking checked, this can make a big difference to any brake judder, even more so with wider wheels..

Thanks

Re: Brake Woes

Hubcentric i assume means centered on on the hub properly. The front ones are the same ones i used with my Abarth wheels so they are the official FIAT part. The rear ones i can make hubcentric by turning down a piece of metal to fit the i.d. of the spacer and fit properly on the o.d. of the hub.

This said I discovered sommert new this evening. I think the brake problem may be causing my engine cutout problem. I had them down as different issues (putting the cutout down to the ECU learning the new map) but it seems they are related.

If am parked up and pump the brake pedal repeatedly the vac gauge moves from its idle point (20) to 15. For those with vac gauges the number will make slightly more sense.

[30 is perfect vacuum, 25 is no thottle and slowing down in gear, 20 is idle, 0 is full throttle (ie no vacuum)]

Anywho, if whilst the engine is cold i approach a junction and slow it down using second gear then press the clutch down and use the brakes to stop the car the engine cuts out. The vac gauge continues round towards 0 then the engine dies. The same happens when the engine is warm but it is able to not stall itself.
Basicly according to the vac gauge i am at full throttle even though my right foot is on the brake pedal.

My guess is servo line leak but its dark so i have not been able to check.

Any other suggestions?
Ta

Re: Brake Woes

Hi,
Does the car idle ok on its own (no brake applied), if the engine speed wanders a bit at idle it could be a sh!tted up Idle Control Valve, I know this causes problems when the brakes are applied on other makes, such as the Ford efi engines..

Thanks

Re: Brake Woes

if i pump my brakes at idle, the guage flutters, but then i'd expect that.. i mean the servo is connected to it!

Paul, the idle control valve on chris' sei is shiny and clean - i know this because i cleaned it when i did mine!

Chris, to test if the spacers are causing wobbling with the rear - we could whack the space savers back on and see if it still does it with no spacers? And did u check the screws that hold the ICV in like i suggested when this problem first arose?

You already asked me that and yes i did.

The brake flutter aint really the issue fact that i can make it stall just by pressing the brake is.

Re: Brake Woes

Hi,
Sounds like your servo diaphram may have a hole in it....... ,
if all the other bits are ok....

Thanks

Re: Brake Woes

I have checked the vacuum assist line for leaks and cant see/feel any. It could be a non-return valve fault on the line. Common FIAT problem and to me it seems logical.

Re: Brake Woes

Hi,
Well its cheaper than changing the servo, so give it a try..

Thanks
