| Just wondering if any knows of problems with oil pumps, i have a (96)Cinquecento S 899cc. just in the past week i have noticed when i start the car for about the first 10 seconds it sounds quite ruff and the oil light stays on but then it stops, sounds fine and oil light goes off. now i know it has enough oil ( I do an oil and filter change every 7000 KM, dont know what that is in miles about 4-5 thousand). The car has covered 75000 KM so is the oil pump due to be changed ? to me it sounds like the oil pump, but im open to any ideas as to what the problem is... Thanks

| i am | Re: Oil Pump could be general engine wear or as you say a worn oil pump. what viscosity of oil are you using? | ||

| Thanks, a Multigrade Oil SAE 15w/40 as list in the Haynes manual, seems strange to be engine wear its only covered in miles about 40 thousand. is an oil pump change a big job ?

| mad bad and very very old | Re: Oil Pump Sounding rough will be oil draining from the tappets, as the valves aren't opening properly until the oil pressure gets up. As custard boy asks, what oil are you using? Cheers D

| Multigrade SAE 15w/40 i think it was castrol, its not a tappet noise i did have noisey tappet. its just a general ruff like very little oil sound and as i say it stops after about 10 seconds and sounds fine thanks

| Mr Pedantic | Re: Oil Pump Basically you have a lack of oil pressure to start off with. While a poor-performing oil pump might be a cause of this, it's best to change the cheaper things first! Also, since the problem goes away after 10 seconds or so, this indicates that the oil pump isn't totally borked. I'd try an oil and filter change first, possibly moving to a thinner oil, like 10W40 or 5W40. H | ||

| Re: Oil Pump Thanks hmallett, but as i have said i do an oil and filter change every 7000KM about 4000 miles which is quite regular seeing as most people change there oil every 16-20 thousand miles. i last did and oil and filter change 4500 Kilometers ago just over 2000 miles so, i think doing it again now wont make a difference. but thanks anyway

| Re: Oil Pump Hi, Mine sounds the same, if you put thinner oil in it sounds even worse , even more oil drains from the tappets..Thanks Paul T

Thanks everyone for your advice, it is now happening less frequently , so what viscosity of oil should i really use (I been using 15w 40as stated by haynes) bearing in mind my location whe dont suffer the colder weather like the UK so the general outside temp is higher.once again thanks for everbodies advice

| Re: Oil Pump Hi, I've got 15w50 mineral oil, and it sounds a lot better than it did with 10w40 semi synthetic Thanks Paul T
