after recently puttin up a post on why my car wouldnt start, i have discovered that i need to reprogramme my key code. does anyone know how i find out what this key code is and what the significance of my red key is! havin researched it, apparently the cost of the reprogramming is about £1000!is this too much? if anyone knows more about this than me, could you help please as you can probably tell i know very little!!! thanks x

£1000 is taking the preverberal....

Sounds like you need to get the car down to someone with specialist diagnostic equipment to re-introduce (if you like) your key(s) to the ECU - the ECU acts as an immobiliser via the coded key.

The other option is a pre-coded ECU from an earlier Cinq (i'm pretty sure this will work; I'm sure others will ciorrect me if I'm wrong). The earlier Cinqs did not have the immobilser / red / blue key set up.

HTH and don't forget I've got a 1994 ECU for a 899cc...

Chip from mckrich to disable the immobilser = £40

Decent alarm with everything, including immobiliser, fitted = £200

End result = car is faster/ more responsive and alot more secure

A i right or missing something?

do the above, only if you got a sporting :D

you are very vague with the description of your car, have a i missed a previous post

what year and spec is your car, is it a cinq or sei

there are specialist companies that can re-program your keys so that it will work eith the ecu, this will cost a lot less than 1k

its a cinq 1996 899cc thats all i know!!! its not a sportin either just a standard one

i have a red key i just dont understand what this whole key code thing is, and how i know what itis!!!

your car will have an engine imobilser, this means that only the key/keys with a 'code' that matches the engine imobilser will start the car

normally the red key isnt an issue, but sometimes the car will need to be started with the red key, there is a procedure in doing this, but off the top of my head i dont know, in the cinq->techinical section there is a sticky about key issues, maybe this will answer your queries

You should only use the Blue key(s) to run your car. The car was supplied new with 2 blue keys. The red key should not be used and stored securely at home until (in the unlikely event - usually) that you need to recode either or both of the blue keys.

As you have the 'red' (actually burgandy) key and hopefully 2x blue keys you should be able to recode the blue keys, if this is the problem.

Here follows the process to recode the 2 blue keys -

Using the red key turn the ignition to position 'MAR' for about one second so the code light goes out. (Fingers crossed)

Now before 10 seconds insert first blue key and turn to position 'MAR' for about one second so the code light goes out.

Now again before 10 seconds insert second blue key and turn to position 'MAR' for about one second so the code light goes out and then remove the key.

Now again, before 10 seconds, insert Red key and turn to position MAR for about one second until code light goes out and remove the key.

This process 'should' code all 2 blue keys.

HTH

If you insert the red key and turn the ignition to the 'MAR' setting, does the 'Code' light go out after about one second? If so the above process may just work. If not it sounds like you need to send the ECU off / replace it.

If none of the keys work (red or blue) either the codebox has packed it in because somewhere are voltage drop has locked it forever or the ECU can't read the box or even might have a problem itself. If the red key is inserted and the code light does not come of, look for an uncoded ECU and disconnect the code box (little black or sometimes white box behind the fusebox.

Hi oldschool I have that problem the key will not light up, phoned 1 firm that does free running ecu but he said that it still needed the key code box to run what i could not understand was if it is free running it should not need the code box can you shed any more light on this subject
Thanks
