| New boy... I have joined the ranks of the Cinquecento owners and have bought one of the 704cc 2 cylinder models from 1995 with an 'electronic carb' for running around town. I have noticed the engine is very slow to warm up in the morning and on the motorway, the temperature drops to about 70C - I guess the thermostat is stuck open.... When I change this, are there any preferred anti-freeze makes for this particular model? I see there are problems with corrosion so I want to protect it as much as I can. Is the mixture adjustable on this unit? It smell to be running a little rich at idle and the exhaust is a bit blacker than perhaps it should be. Overall impressions so far are not too bad, honest!@! The gearing is surprisingly high for the car; 4th is pretty much unusable below about 35mph and 1st is quite high for taking off. The clutch is a little sharp but otherwise, it's ideal for the job. Plenty of room for me - 6'4" - and after a week of running around town, the fuel gauge has dropped by about 1/5 after 170km. Looking forward to many km of fun in the sun!

| Re: New boy... I actually managed to get 135km/hr out of it this afternoon on the motorway - it's slow obviously but not a complete disaster, especially in town... I managed to get past a German touring coach on a flat motorway section which was quite a boost to the confidence - I think they are limited to 60mph... My other car is a 1993 Mercedes 500E built by Porsche and I am trying to keep the daily miles down on that, hence the run-a-bout. Talk about chalk and cheese! Both "500's" though!

| Re: New boy... Again, im from th UK and we cant get these, sounds very interesting. Is it watercooled or air cooled? I would be interested to know what kind of fuel economy you get from it! Phil

| Re: New boy... Water cooled, with a Cat. I think the non-cat version in 1bhp more... Not sure how big the tank is yet but will post the figure of the fuel consumption when I fill up next time.

| Principality Retained :) | Re: New boy... Wow, now theres a rarity in these parts....a 704cc 'er! Welcome... ![]() Im sure you'll make yourself at home. Oh, and FYI, 70 deg C seems about a reasonable running temp - my Sporting (with both the 1108 and 1242cc engines) averages that on the Motorway, as did my 899cc. As for coolant\antifreeze, it doesnt really matter as long as it is mixed correctly .For mixture adjustment, I thought the 704cc had a choke? It might also be ECU controlled though, but Im afraid im really not too sure on that! Much chance of any engine bay pics? Id be really interested to see what that motor looks like in the Cinq! EDIT - The Fuel tank's 35L I think.

| Re: New boy... Well, filled up on Saturday - 41.2mpg, pretty much just around town. The official figure in the handbook is just over 4 litres / 100km on a decent A-road run - over 60mpg... I might try a run to Marseille this week, about 400km round trip, and see what it can do on the motorway. Brave or what... Proving to be ideal for the run-around. Gear changes have to be a little slow to be smooth as the engine keeps the rpm up a bit for a while after lifting off the throttle, somthing I have noticed in a few other cars. Smell of petrol after filling up, I think from the filler cap but other than that, all going well. I will try to get a digital camera and get some photos of the engine - it's pretty small, about half the width of the engine bay....
