Rev counter

I know there a probably a million threads asking this question but here goes - rev counters and 899 Cinqs. I have 2 questions
1 - Can you use a 2 cylinder bike rev counter?
2 - Failing that, I understand that a 4 cylinder rev counter will under read by exactly half. Is that right cos of the dual coil system? What I might do is buy an aftermarket 4 cyl counter off ebay or something (halfords do one but it states for single coil only - but I'd probably ignore that ) and change the numbers - change 1 for 2, 2 for 4 etc. and see if I can get a 5,000 rpm max one!

Cheers in advance

Re: Rev counter

1. Should be able to, I've hooked a Sei rev counter up to a cinq and it reads half so the ecu must give out a standard type 4 cylinder signal.

2. Might read a bit jumpy, the sei one did.

Re: Rev counter

Hi,
I've stripped some cinq sporting clocks down, and there should be a way of making it read double what its supposed to by changing some electronic components, so that it would read correct....if you know what I mean..
The circuit board inside has a few resistors, a capacitor and an ic control chip(pulse counter), the count should be controlled by the resistors I think..
Will have to investigate deeper I think....when I get some time

Thanks
Paul T

Re: Rev counter

Just thought of something - I could get an aftermarket tacho and make a dial face as described in one of the stickys, but every 500 rpm = 1000 actual rpm! Just need a 4/5000 rpm max rev counter (like off a 4 cyl lorry - I'll have to have a root around).

Re: Rev counter

Hi,
Just outside Neath, there's not much in the scrappies at the mo, a 94 cinq 899cc in PickupSpares and a 95 899cc in Owens in Aberdare, plenty of uno's though...

Thanks
Paul T

Re: Rev counter

Owens usually have a Cinq, I had to get a rear wiper arm after some little F****r (I have a good idea who) snapped my old one off. Is it a red cinq with mild frontal damage missing its rear wiper, to the right as you go into the yard?

Re: Rev counter

I know what you mean about the rain, when I went there (last summer) the carpets were swimming and the wheels were on the back seat!

Re: Rev counter

Hi,
Na not going to max power, getting a bit old now for that sort of thing....

Think max power just goes a bit too far these days, its forgotten about the people who can't afford to blow 30k of mods on a car.....

Any good scrappies up your way.....?

Thanks
Paul T

Re: Rev counter

Nah Owens is the best. There is one in Taffs Well, just outside Cardiff, but they are tiny compared to Owens

Re: Rev counter

Hi,
Has anyone got a good photo of the timing pulley on the cinq sporting engine, the rev counter I think takes its signal from this, as when I calculated my rev counter reading's when I put a signal in it was just under half(45%) of the reading it should have had, this makes me think the rev counter on a sporting is sensor controlled and not ignition controlled.

Thanks
Paul T

Timing pulley?

Crank or Cam end?
I presume you mean crank end..

FYI, the TDC sensor takes its signal from the outer ring of the alternator drive pulley (thats toothed), and that bolts into the crank pulley. I can get piccys, but not till sat-sun!

Re: Rev counter

Could a 2 cylinder car tacho (e.g. off a 2CV or a 126 or something) fit? There is 1 tacho on ebay that is suitable for 2 cylinder cars. Would that work?
Cheers
