Erratic Idling

Greetings to you all from a newbie!
After having the head gasket changed a month ago, my Cinq 900cc started idling erratically when warm. At the lights, it either idles very fast or oscillates. The mpg has taken a hit as well.

Garage which did the HG says it could be potentiometer or stepper motor, but would need a FIAT diagnosis (£70) to make sure.

Could there be anything else worth looking at before I go to FIAT?

Thanks.

Re: Erratic Idling

Hi,
Welcome, you could try cleaning the idle control valve, its on the rear left of the throttle body, held in by two torx head screws, give it a blast with choke and carb cleaner.......they do get ****ted up and can give the symptoms you have described. Also make sure all the pipes and wires going to the top of the engine are secure since the head was removed..

Thanks
Paul T

a diagnostic check at fiat dealers is not £70! more like £20.
a 70 quid diagnostic would write mine off! hehe

OK philbo - to be fair if it takes less than half an hour I am quoted £35, longer than that £70. An intermittent fault like this could well push it over half an hour.
