head gasket gone?

Hello lovlies,

I wonder if you could help me please. I was searching through the forum and i saw a post about the cinquecento with the misfiring cylinder and losing water from the resevoir which eventually was found to be corrosion on the cylinder and leakage into the combustion chamber.

Basically, my car has started to lose water in the resevoir rapidly after every drive and seems to have air in it. I put K Seal in it but to no avail and im pretty sure that when i start it from cold i'm pretty sure it's misfiring a bit.

I am a complete novice when it comes to cars and apart from the general upkeep of mine i have no clue (although i really really want to learn and am starting to), but please what would be your advice to me. Would i be able to fix a problem like this myself or do i need to take it in. Is it relatively easy/cheap?

thanks so much in advance x

Re: head gasket gone?

First thing to do is make sure it really is the head gasket. Get a garage to do a coolant pressurisation and/or compression test (or do the compression test yourself).

Re: head gasket gone?

a garage is gonna want £200 plus to fix a head gasket. so make sure you get it diagnosed properly. hg's are a pain but not too difficult to fix.

a slight misfire could also be a plug lead breaking down, if they have not been disturbed for a very long time then they are quite cheap to replace.

Re: head gasket gone?

fill it with water and leave the resevoir cap of then start the engine and give it a good steady rev if the water bubbles up and rises then its usualy the head gasket but get a second opinion

Here's a second opinion.. "It's the head gasket".

It's an easy one to fix, if you are handy with the spanners.. Fit a new cam-belt and tensioner too, so you don't have to do that again for a few years.
