light gremlins

i have afew issues with my lights on my 1996 1.1 cinq sporting, i'm guessing bad earths, but they all seem to be in good condition.

when i break my n/s indicator comes on.
when indicating left they work, but when i break they become solid.
when indicating left my sidelights flash with them.
when dipped beam is on the n/s indicators become solid,

the part that gets me is the head lights and indicators are on different switches and different units.
also,my speedo cable has snapped, do i need a speedo for mot??
any help, do i need a new loom, and is it reasonably simple to change?

Re: light gremlins

You can never tell that the earths are OK by looking. Need to undo them, clean them up, coat with vaseline or silicon grease, do em up again. The ones under the bumper are well worth a look.

Other possibilities are wrong bulbs/wrongly fitted bulbs/corroded bulbs or contacts/failed bulbs.

Halfords have a great little glass fibre pen thing which is ideal for cleaning difficult to get at stuff.

A long afternoon with WD40, vaseline, a scotchbite pad and a glass fibre pen should see it sorted.

Shouldn't need to, mum's punto went through 2 MOT's without the speedo working. Tacho must work if theres is one but apparently the speedo doesn't. Seems a bit wierd to me but thats the rule.

Obvioulsy though, speedo is quite handy so would get new one, won't be expensive

Re: light gremlins

Earths for the rear lights. Under the back bumper. There are also more obvious earths in the engine bay.

Re: light gremlins

It could be the alarm that's causing the problem. Or crappy fitting.

Swapping the loom is one way to go, quite a bit of work, though, another might be popping into an auto-electrician.

Re: light gremlins

Did you clean the connections on the rear light clusters and the earths under the back bumper?

Still sounds like an earth problem to me.

Cheers
