Halfords touch-up paint

Hi all, took advantage of the nice weather to touch up a few scratches - went to my local fiat dealer, closing down![:(!] Didn't have my paint in shop so I went to Halfords to get a touchup kit.

Anyways, I tried the paint out on the inside of the door, looked the right match. Being a good little boy I applied the primer, waited, then applied the paint. Turns out the primer is far lighter, and it seems to make the paint seem lighter! Applying more coats doesn't seem to make a difference.

Has anybody else had bad experiences with these kits? as right now my car's looking like a skunk [xx(] Official stuff for me from now on...

I can see the top of my car in the car park...

I could use some, but my cinq is so battered it would look odd being painted, Non-scratched areas on my car stand out more than the damn scratches! Poor lil thing.......

Like Donz said, once the paint has dried, it really needs to be cut to blend in with the rest of the paintwork. Maybe even laquered. And definitley polished.

The last paint job I did was on an old PC case - stop laughing, it'll make sense - it looked totally different and miles better after I had applied several coats of laquer.

But if it's just a little scratch, as opposed to say a whole roof, then I'm not sure if it would provide such a dramatic result.

Cheers lads, will persevere with the lacquer, if that don't work I'll admit defeat with glass paper.

Just an update, the Halfords paint was slightly 'out' colour-wise in the end so I got the 'official' stuff, gave it another coat and lacquered and T-cutted it to oblivion.

Job done.

Ouch,Blue - Just pay the mafia the money, stop your car getting whacked in future!

BTW, if you're flush with funds I would recommend a bodyshop if you're a beginner to this painting lark - it was my first go at it and in one or two places it doesn't look 'right' when in direct sunlight - oh the agony.

its nowhere near as bad as it could have been!!
the door was open and it skimmed the edge of it and so didnt dent it or anything in the door had been shut it would have hit the wing or bonnet at speed with the pointed it
makes me feel ill thinking of how bad it would have been!

it was a big 5ft bar leaning against the garage wall and wen i put my car in the garage and got out the car i slammed the door shut and it rocked the wall and the bar fell just as my girlfriend opened her door. it hit her in the hand and then hit the edge of the door and fell on the floor luckily missing the wing and anything else that it would have dented its only taken 2 bits of paint off one about 1cm long and the other a bit shorter oh and a load of skin off my girlfriends fingers but that grows back for free paint costs money

don't get the kits from halfords shelf, go to the back desk and ask them to make some up for you, i did this with my Brava, £6.99 for a big tub with brush,£8.99 for a spray tin, My brava is fiat antonelli red, none of the shelf kits matched but the stuff the guy mixed is spot on identical to my car, he even came outside and tried a bit on the inside of the wheelarch just to make sure, i didn't even have a code i just told him that it was fiat antonelli red and he went on the computer and then got black, orange, red white and burgendy and put the correct weight of paint into the tub on the scales and mixed it, it took about 3 minutes altogether, i recommend this for touch ups and scratches big time.and i bet it's a whole lot cheaper than going to a fiat dealer.
