Re: rattle can spray job

use a gun so much easyer just be carefull.. laquer wise stating the obvious matt laquer, if you was to take it to a proper bodyshop would be big money.. doable with cans but the amount your gonna spend on tins you could probably by yourself a spray gun and the paint/laquer in the end..

Re: rattle can spray job

dont do it with rattle cans !

the paint is simply not hard enough and i will tell you the paint will fall off in no time at all.

go to a paint supplier and get some 2k primer and also a tin of solid matt black paint. it will not require lacquering.

you will need to prep the car and prime it. when it is primed flat the car and then once this has been achieved you can hit it with the solid colour. providing you dont get any dirt in it you will not need to polish it.

You wouldn't -- you'd need matt lacquer and then, why do a matt base coat!

I think matt black will be hard to do. A lot of the success you can get out of a can is down to good prep and then lac and lots of work with T cut. You can't really T cut matt or it'll turn shiney.....

I'd hire spray equipment. But it's still a big job.

Re: rattle can spray job

I grew up around VW nuts and restored/moded Bugs. One of the last ones I did was a Baja bug (sort of off road raced in the Baja desert). It did not need to look perfect as it was a kinda rat style.

Anyway I built it and was going to get it sprayed but found a really old amercian hotrod book that showed how to spray a car on your driveway. There was loads of prep involved and I had to buy a compressor (should have bought a bigger one tho) but it looked wicked when finished. Yeah it wasn't a mirror but it suited the car. Plus if you buy 2nd hand compressor and gun, paint you car then you can sell for about the same price and all it's cost you is a tin of paint. It was so good my dad did the same with his MG.

I did a sand rail style buggy with matt black by brush and that looked ok too but only because of the type of car it was.

Re: rattle can spray job

Using 2K is a bit OTT for someone who (from the sound of it) is gonna use it at home?

The prep is the most important part. I would be looking at how much buying/renting a compressor and paint compares to buying enough cans to do the job.

A local bodyshop may be willing to do a topcoat at a decent price provided the car comes to them fully prepped and primed - I've heard of people doing this before.

Re: rattle can spray job

spray cans are no good because the paint washes off. if anything like thinners or acid rain gets near then goodbye paint job . please dont be silly you will be wasting your time i promise you.

right i have decided today that i wont be doing it with cans , i had a talk to one of the sprayers down by my works and he said he would lend me a compressor and gun for nufin , but then i will have the go see how much the paint is going to cost me . and i think this is going to be a summer time job

Re: rattle can spray job

try your best to get somewhere secure without dust so you can spray. prepping can be done anywhere but the paint will reflect how good your prep is.

i painted mine this morning after a whole week of prepping i.e removing dents and smoothing bits etc.

take your time but remember if you decide to go for a solid colour as i suggested then i would reccomend you buy it now because paint suppliers will not be allowed to mix or sell it any longer soon. it is all going waterbased

Re: rattle can spray job

Sorry to hijack the thread, but, Rory, if you were to paint Blue, how much paint/thinners would I need to get in? Any idea of the cut off date?

i would get 1 and a half litres do spray a whole cinq or sei and thats giving it a generous coat.

you have to mix solid colours with hardeners whereas base and clear you have to mix the hardener to the lacquer. solid colours are easy to paint as you dont have to travel around the car so many times which would increase the risk of dirt getting in the paint. you are also less likely to get runs.

you would need to buy the paint, and if base and clear you would need lacquer but not if painting a solid. you would also need the hardener and some thinners.

when you buy the paint it will say on the front of the tin the mix ratio. usually its 2:1 or 3:1 it just depends on brands etc.
