V5 Document

Hi people,

Recently I've been to look at a car with the intention of purchasing it. I really like the car and am seriously considering buying it but there is one important issue with the V5 document that is concerning me.

The current seller of the car IS NOT registered as the "registered keeper" on the V5 document. The previous "registered keeper" has not signed the V5 at all. The person selling the car bought it from an auction approx 3 weeks ago and has the auction receipt to prove the purchase of the car.

As I understand it the owner of the vehicle (i.e. the current "registered keeper" on the V5 document) needs to sign the current "registered keeper" section of the V5.

If I was to purchase the vehicle I have to complete the "new keeper" section of the blue part of the form, and sign it as well. The current owner ("registered keeper") then sends the blue section of the V5 away to the DVLA. I fill in my details in the green section of the V5 and send that away.

Do I need the V5 document to be signed by "registered keeper", or can it be signed by the current owner (even though they aren't the "registered keeper" on the V5 document).

Thanks

David

Heya,
Having read the DVLA site, it seems that you can ignore the current v5 ie. pretend you have never had it and apply for a new one from DVLA:
"If you are the new keeper and the V5 or V5/2 is not available, in order to obtain a V5 you will need to complete a V62 and send it to DVLA"
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/faq/faq_tax_car.htm

Or ring them up and ask them for advice. It's also worth getting a data check done on the car to ensure it isn't stolen/ dodgy considering it's history:

my best advice is, "If in doubt, Walk away". If he bought it from an auction 3 weeks ago, why is he selling it? I sniff something dodgy, sorry fella
