how do you clean your car?

Take to brothers valeting bay.
rinse with powerwash.
spray with tfr(traffic film remover)(like they use on lorries/buses)
wait 1 min.
rinse with powerwash.
more tfr.
big soft brush.
rinse
use some water dispeller the missis bought me from halfords(works well)
shammy off.
about evry 3 months my bro uses some final glaze stuff they use on new bmws(and charge you about 200 quid for)cos he says the tfr is a bit harsh.

Generally

Wash with 2 buckets, one for clean and one to rinse the wash mitt. I use a turtlewax wash and wax product.

At the moment I finish off with a rinse using demon shine as a rinse agent and dry with a Microfibre cloth. I've found the Tesco blue MFs are very good and can dry my car with just one. This stage prevents the water spots you mention.

If I was allowed to use the pressure washer that would come out to do a first stage rinse before moving onto the buckets of water and the final rinse but we're not. Darn drought orders.

ok, hose it down/pressure wash if really mucky.

then using bucket of water and car shampoo wash the car/ excluding the wheels for the time being.

once finished, hose it down.

then using chamois leather dry it off, with a mandatory bottle of sprite to quench my thirst ;) funkyf1/stilosporting/sportingmissus know its right

then clean the alloys after

move onto the windows using Autoglym Fast glass

then using turtle wax tyre magic black the tyres

and if i feel like it wax the car ;)

and soon to purchase a clay bar (y) cheers f1 for showing the way

i normally just-

wash car body with halfords advanced wash with a sponge, then wash windows, mirrors, lights, with sponge then wash bumpers then wash wheels and lastly wash under arches, under side of car and then rinse car.

then il dry the windows, let car dry (you cant really see water marks on metalic silver :) ), polish the rear lights as they go rather dull, then put back to black on bumpers, mirrors and handles and bump strips and tyre shine on the tyres.

i hoover interior, and clean windows, and use a damp cloth to clean the plastics, never bother doing the seats.

then about every 2 months or so il go round with some scratch remover, silver metalic colour restorer made by errrr turtle wax i think, then il wax it with any wax i can find.

Print of the advice you have all posted and get kids to wash the car, if you dont have kids borrow some that are trust worthy.hehe:D

im a valeter i clean mine by jetting the thick of the dirt off then sponge it with a wash and wax(dnt use fairy liquid it scratches the paint) then jet it off then get a shammy (leather) depending wot u call it and dry it with that and then polish it and i would use autoglym i find there stuff is really good and i always polish the windows and give it a gud hoover and then use tyre wall paint
