Can't shift 'em. Tried. Cried.

Awight all?

Let's start a 'lil ball rolling here.. My front suspension is knacked - both shocks have breathed a little sigh and vented their contents, so for the moment I'm running on spring. Unhappy with this, I got myself a nice new pair of shocks and springs and set about the happy task of replacing them.

I got about five minutes into the job and found myself staring at a couple of bolts on the bottom of shock, which link into the hub carrier. I took the nuts off and started on the bolts themselves. Could I shift them? Could I b*gg*ry. Now, I pumped the thing with the 'owd WD. I tried heating them. I tried to shift them with a two foot bar. I even gave them a firm talking to with a five pound hammer - we're talking serious immobility.

Does anyone have any idea how I'm going to shift these two bolts? Drilling really not being a preferred option!

ps. Hey minty boy!

Soak them in engine oil overnight if possible. WD40 won't touch a seized bolt. Then give the end of the bolt a belting. Supprised it wont come out though as it sounds similar mounting to my tipo and they cane out fine even after 10 years of corroding in sea air!

Well, I'll admit that the WD was just because I like the smell. (reminds me of good old 4star)....

Cheers for the advice tho, I'll rig up a little bath for them and see what happens.

I didn't quite mean soak in a bath, just pour some on via an oil can and leave that to soak in overnight!

But leave them in a bath if you can. Can't hurt!

Re: Can't shift 'em. Tried. Cried.

try pushing the arm/disc/caliper etc down a bit as this rides up into the shock and will be holding the bolts in place

Edit: although probably not to the extent where they wouldnt shift to a hammer sorry stumped lol

Tried an impact wrench?
Tried hammering the nearest undersize imperial socket on and giving that death? I find that works if all else fails...esp on head bolts!

put the nut on the bolt end with no thread showing.now hit nut very, very hard.it should shift.if not, heat carrier up very hot, then hit again and again until it budges.

Thanks for all the suggestions peeps!

I'll be having the beast apart again next weekend, so I'll let you know how it goes.
