hi folks. ive searched the threads about faded paint but cant find the answer. ive noticed that my paint work is beginning to turn different shades of orange! and i want to restore it to its former glory.

im looking for a t-cut or similar, but where would i find an appropriate one for my orange????

any help would be greatly appreciated (y)

Assuming its the carribean orange GP you have?

Because the paint system is two part, base colour and clear coat, nothing you use will bring back the paint to its former glory.

Its the pigments (most lilely the red part) in the paint which fade under UV light. Because this is protected by the top clear coat layer nothing you will do will restore the colour (Trust me, I was a development chemist at a paint manufacturer ;)). Orange and reds are notoriously prone to fading, as UV light wavelengths affect these colour horrendously.

What should have happened is to use a wax which contains UV filters, like the ones in sun creams, to protect the paint layer from UV exposure.

My orange GP is faded in places, particularly the rear end. This is probably because the previous owner left the rear exposed to the sun more than the rest of the car.

Certainly a good quality wax will help improve shine, and therefore lessen the impact of faded areas by improving optical clarity. I use meguires on my car, and when it is nice and shiney you dont notice the faded rear end as much.

If it gets too bad you could always consider getting a vinyl wrap done, matt black would look awersome on a GP.

Lovedog,

I dont entierly agree with you, you can restore the paint back to its former glory i wouldnt imagine the clearcoat would have been perished

OrangeGP, my advice would be to get on this forum, and have a look at previous car owners work and follow their advice theres plenty about.

Most newer cars come with a clearcoat now so the transformation wouldn’t be like they 2 threads.

Older cars with solid paint generally did not have clearcoat, certainly with Red Vauxhalls, I don’t know about older red Fiats.

Bugger, this is what i have feared as last summer it was kept clean and polished regularly, however over the winter and since i havnt had the time to keep on top of it, and seing it at night or in bright sunshine now just makes my stomach turn to think ive let it go. Looks like ill just skip the 'tcut' and go for a decent wax then.

I have lots of good polishes, most of the auto glym range ha but the only wax i have is auto glym aqua wax. Ill look out for some meguires wax then and give that a go.

Cheers for your replys folks

I used to have the same problem with the "Broom Yellow" on my Mk2 Sporting. Nothing ever got it back to matching colour on the different panels. It seemed there was a particular issue with the painted plastic body kit, compaired with the metal body panels. I used to wash and wax that badboy at least once a month ... but nothing stopped the paint fading.
thats one of the main reasons i didnt go for a Yellow/Red/Orange GP and instead went for the Chemical Grey.
I mean yes the Carribean Orange looks Totaly Awesome when new ... but for how long ? Ive seen 2 or 3 ppl with the same problem your having ...
Its a shame really ... cause it shouldnt happen in this day and age.
