hi all

just wondering what products are good for getting surface scratches out of paintwork? i used some harsh rubbing compound originally, then t-cut, then mer and had an amazing shine, unfortunately this didnt last too long (possibly down to me taking it through a car wash and jet washed it a few times lol)

ive bought a halfords touchup stick and went round and done all the chips and scratches, i still need to flat them down with 2000 grit wet n dry, my main problem is im worried about taking the paint off (thinking im getting close to the limit)

ive got some menguars scratchx, and the stuff seems to be ****e, rubbed it into the bonnet 3 times in one patch and it didnt make a difference to the swirls:confused:

might possibly invest in a cheap mop, anyone reccomend a cheap one? is g3 compound worth trying?

cheers all

sam

You're wasting your time trying to get 2000 grit marks out by hand.

You need to learn more before jumping in and wet sanding/maching polishing a car with zero experience.

the problem you had is that you didn't protect the paintwork very well after you t-cutted it

only way to see what paint you have left to play with is to get someone like Mark Elvin or another detailer to go over it with a paint thickness gauge

problem with them thickness gauges is that they can't measure how much clear coat is left only paint.

Best way to get rid of scratches is to use something like meguiars scratch x, then some kind of paint cleaner, polish (can do this a couple of times to gloss the paintwork) then use wax to put a top coat over.

You only need to do this once a year and in between washes use speed detailer with a microfibre cloth after it's been dried to keep the shine.

They can if you get a good gauge, e.g positector.

Cinq's are single stage, the paint layer is quite thick on them.
