Confused over polishing!

Hi,i realise this subject matter really has been talked about to death, but if anyone cold read this post and give me some personal advice i would really appreciate it:-)
Ok(i'll try to be as concise as poss'),i recently bought a V reg Punto in standard non metallic red which was very faded. After asking advice from various people it seemed that T-cut and turtle wax was the most popular recommendation.Fine.So i spent a day lovingly doing each small section of the car and initially was happy with the overall effect, which seemed to bring out the original colour well. After i'd finished i noticed that in some areas it looked quite blotchy-)i'm not sure whether it was because i wasn't putting the same amount of effort/pressure on each section or what)-ie a patch of 'new' red and then a blotch of the faded red.I mean not really obviously, only from some angles.
Since then i've not touched the Tcut for fear of the same happening again but i wanted to ask a couple of things:
1-will the blotchy effect fade in time?
2-have i buggered up the paint by doing this?
3-how exactly can i get a nice, equal and consistent shine back?(ie what products?)
In my opinion it seems the only way to effectively use Tcut is with some sort of professional circular buffer thing, applying the same amount of pressure over the whole car, because it seems almost impossible by hand(or maybe cuz i'd never done it before!but i did try very hard).
Any help would be fantastic

Re: Confused over polishing!

Hi mate.... i doubt you have buggered the pain with t-cut, its pretty hard to do it with that stuff. To get a propper original condition finish to the paint, what you really need is a machine polisher and some cutting compound such as G3. (both of which you can probably get cheap off E-Bay). This should bring the paint back up to original condition, as the fading you have is where the paint has oxadised over the years (is very common with red cars as the pigment that is used to make it red is very suseptable to oxidation). TBH the blotchy effect will probbaly be around for a while unrtill you give it a propper going over.

Have you got any PIC's so we can see how bad etc?

Cheers,
Alan

Re: Confused over polishing!

Thanks for the info Alan. I haven't got any pics unfortunately. To be honest it isn't really that noticeable, its just that i am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my cars and its bugging me a bit. You can notice the blotches of new red/faded red if you look hard. The odd thing is that the front quarter of the car had obviously been given a professional polish as it looks like new.
So you say i need to give it a machine polish to rectify the colour? i would happily pay money for someone to do it for me, as i don't really have the time to hunt around for a circular polisher thingy.
So going over it all with something like autoglym wouldn't get rid of the blotches?

You might want to get over to www.detailingworld.co.uk car valeting/detailing forum and put up a post (you'll have to register as member first obviously) to find a pro-detailer in your area who can machine polish for you (proper machine polishers are quite expensive bits of kit and it wouldn't be worth your while just buying one to do just one job on your car) + they will be able to recommend the correct polish/glazes/waxes you need to buy to keep the finish they've achieved on your car.

It's a massive forum with a huge membership so there's sure to be someone who can do it for you. It's a great site which, judging by your post so far, you will find really interesting. We're a friendly and extremely knowledgable bunch over there and am sure it will solve your problem.
btw red cars also are the worst for fading because of their reaction to UV rays (something to do with red being at the wrong place in the colour spectrum)

P.S After you've registered go to the forum home page and put your request in either the 'newbie' section or the 'polish/glaze' section.

Hope this helps you out mate

Re: Confused over polishing!

Forgive my ignorance but I thought T-cutting a metallic was a no-no bexause you remove the laquer which gives the paint the shine and protects it?

Maybe a good cutting with a power polisher but then a re-laquer? Expensive!

Generally speaking yes you're right but this guy's paint is non-metallic.

Re: Confused over polishing!

Most modern paints, solid or metallic, use a lacquer.

Re: Confused over polishing!

Thanks for all the advice guys
Yes,as i said my paint is not metallic-its the classic old skool Fiat red.
So it seems that the answer is to get a pro with a machine buffer thing to go over it for me,yes?

Re: Confused over polishing!

Or just buy one yourself. Variable speed polisher with a soft red foam polishing head (screwfix/machinemart/ebay), unless you're stupid you can't do damage with such a soft polishing head.

Re: Confused over polishing!

use original t-cut and a cloth, work it in with small circular motions and a fair amount of pressure. then do the same again but this time use red t-cut and softer motions. now the final coat use carnauba wax and a soft polishing cloth. do that 4 times a year and it'll stay bright red.
