Cleaning Brake Calipers

I have a punto mk1, and have recently fitted alloy's allong with drilled and grooved disc brakes, but have found my brake calipers are very rusty and dirty.
What is the best and easiest way to clean them??
I have used some engine cleaner to clean my engine from oil and just give it a general clean, but no idea what to do about calipers. Is there something I can buy to clean them with, or is there a better alternative?
Thanks
Werner

Re: Cleaning Brake Calipers

Thanks, do you use anything to cover the actual disc brake? or just wipe it clean after?

Re: Cleaning Brake Calipers

wd40 will burn off fairly quickly once you drive, but i would try to avoid getting it on the disc as much as possible. braking will obviously be affected until it burns off. a quick wipe down when you finish would be a good idea.

Re: Cleaning Brake Calipers

I use a wire brush on mine, and a small eletrical screwdriver for any awkward angles, or around cast in writing etc. You can paint cure rust on to any exposed metal to stabilise the rust, use an artist brush. I didnt use WD40 at all, but jug is right, I even got overspray of 3 in one penetrating on the MGB once, didnt even know it was there when I road tested the car(wiped it off of course and spun the wheel to make sure none between the pads and disc. )
