The car is a peach when the engine is cold. When it gets hot(normal coolant temperature/ temperature gauge goes half way through) this mental **** happens! Also, when the temperature gauge is down, the car won't start. Hence, bang it to get the Temperature gauge back up and only then the car starts! (Needs to be spanked, lol!)
