Hi,

I jacked my 1.9 150 '57 Bravo up on the weekend, as I'm planning to service it myself and thought it was worth having a nosey underneath ahead of time.

Like quite a lot of you fellow Bravovians, the plastic under engine protective cover catches speed humps all the time for me. When I took it off on Saturday there were a couple of things I was curious about:

1. Should there be a soft spongy material stuck to it (on the engine side)? I've found the replacement part on ebay but it doesn't have the spongy material stuck to it. Mine has seemingly absorbed a hell of a lot of oil over the years (but the oil leaks on it are another problem I need to look at!). If it is neccesary, anyone got a part number? :)

2. Should it be secured with cable ties at the back? If you look at the ebay listing above, the two oblong holes at the top of the picture are the ones that have cable-ties instead of screws on mine. All the other holes have screws through

Before anyone mentions it, the trolley jack on the right is a failsafe- I've got a 2nd axle stand directly behind it!

Thanks

The spongy material won't be available as a separate part, it's integral with the OEM cover. I suspect the spongy material is partly there to absorb noise (as well as oil!).

Your cover is fixed with cable ties because some mechanic in the past has lost or broken the proper fixings. The fixings should be available from a FIAT dealer, though I recall they are bolt-type fixings which tend to seize and shear. You may need to drill out the remains of the old fixings before you can fit new ones.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'll keep an eye out for the original part. Bit strange that the ebay part hasn't got the sponge like the original

Ah, thought that may have been the case with the cable ties! In all honesty I might work around them instead of replacing the fixings. They've held up fine for the year that I've had the car!

Tie-raps, together with duct tape and WD40 are the best DIYers friends ;-)

My under-tray is fixed with self tappers. The cable ties may be fitted to allow the tray to hang / hinge to avoid totally removing it. The Material on the tray is sound deadening and is quite possibly not fitted to petrol versions.
