So it used to happen only on cold mornings, but then it started happening more frequently and now it's virtually every morning and sometimes even after only 8 hours of being parked.

I turn the key, it tries to start but just doesn't run. The starter kicks over and it tries, but no joy. After 5 seconds with the car just powered to accessories I can turn the key and it will start fine.

It's worse when the car is parked on an incline.

I can always avoid it by just turning the keys to accessories and then waiting 5-10 seconds and then turning the key. But if I don't do that then it will just turn turn turn and not start.

The car is a Fiat Ritmo (Bravo in the UK) 2008 T-Jet Sport (1.4L Petrol)

My issue is definitely not the battery or fuel... I am on my third battery since the issue first started.

Incidentally the issue is made worse by the incline of parking, and duration parked.

This morning (car has been parked level in the garage since 2pm yesterday) and started first turn.

But my battery likes to die every 18 months without warning, which is another matter for another thread.

Hi, :)
I always let the "self-test" cycle the warning lights before cranking.., and have never had any issues starting, (on over 10 modern era FIAT's)

do you have to wait LONGER than that..??

certainly NOT battery,
fuelling generally - a possibility,
it's cranking - so must be either no spark or no fuel.

I just put the key in and turn, starts every time on the first crank ... unless it's sat for more than 8 hours on an incline.

Never needed to wait for the checks before, now that I think about it I have not even noticed anything like a 'ready to start' indicator.

I will however investigate this over the course of this week.

That all being said, this problem only started to develop in winter and then got worse and carried on in summer and now is daily (daily when parked on incline not as often when parked level).

I am thinking it's some kind of fuel pressure issue maybe... perhaps it's loosing pressure I don't know. But it's just frustrating to deal with.

Hi,
Two things spring to mind, water or other contamination in fuel filter or a weak fuel pump.
The only thing that changes with ignition on is the length of time the fuel pump runs for.
Could also be contamination (water, piece of rag or plastic blocking pick-up) in the fuel tank.
I'd change the fuel filter first as it's cheap and easy.

Sounds like it's the well known problem that the t-jets have with cold starts ( after the engine gets cold enough).
It gets worse if the fuel level is under 3/4 tank.

As far i figured out it needs a bit more fuel during cold starts.
