Hi Guys,

Just discovered a bit of an odd situation with the car recently.

Since I've had the car it's not been giving back the MPG I was hoping for and I think I know why now.

On some runs it gives back what I'd expect, which is high 50's low 60's on a nice A road and motorway run. However, sometimes it will only give back around 40. When I was trundling along the other day doing 30mph in 4th on a flat bit of road, usually it would read in the 80's on instant consumption, but it was in the 30s!!!

When I pulled up at some lights and went into neutral the rev counter was revving up and down constantly by a hundred revs or so each second, and i assume it was doing this during the drive as well, resulting in the poor economy.

Has anyone had this before, or know of any reason why it would be doing this? One of the main reasons I got the car was for better economy than my 1.4 petrol, and whilst it's better on the whole, it's not where it should be in my mind.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Mate,

If you have the 2.0 or the 1.6 multijet then this might be the DPF regeneration cycle (occurs about every 100 miles or so). This is a normal thing

If its the 1.9 then might be worth unplugging the MAF sensor to see if the car revs better and idles better, in which case you have diagnosed yourself a faulty MAF

hope this helps.

More info on car milage etc would help you

Hi,

It's a 2.0 multijet. It's done just over 100k and has been well serviced from what i can gather from the history, I've only had the car 6 weeks or so. Will be taking it for it's next service at the end of this month so hoping they may find something.

From what I understood taking the car out for a good blast should clear out the DPF? It rarely gets driven short journeys, or town miles.

It;s just concerning me how bad the economy is on some runs, it's like i'm driving a v6 petrol or something.

Bit of a curveball, but has it been particularly windy wherever you are recently?

On Friday I drove from York to Liverpool and back when gusts were in the 50-60mph region.
On the way there I only got 45mpg in to the headwind (normally get around 52mpg - 1.9MJ 150).
On the way back, same route and speed but with a tailwind I got 64mpg! (y)

So what's the average mpg ? I also have the 2litre multijet 165 and get about 45 mpg

Averaging about 50mpg at the moment.

I drive very economically though, i would get 50 from the 1.4 punto. On a good long m'way run in that i would get 55, on this i rarely get 55 on a trip up the m'way to my dads which is about a 45 mile run. Just seems odd to me...

Mate you have a much more powerful and heavy car. Your mpg looks great
To me. In which case I suspect you
Are Noticing the DPF regeneration
