i have a fiat bravo 2009 with 2.0 diesel 165hp mjet engine , it has 150k kilometers and i bought when it had 140k 5 months ago . recently it goes to limp mode(rev wont go higher than 2500rpm and no power) and check engine light comes up . as soon as i turn off the car and restart it again it goes back to normal power with light still on . but after 5-10 minutes i lose power again and it also has a black smoke sometimes. this mainly happens on highway trips. i checked at a fiat dealer and they said it might need a turbo change or repair and they said if its repaired it costs around 500$(400 euros) and the change costs 2000$(1700 euro)
but i read through some forums and they said if the turbo is bad then it wont work at all but i get the power back when i reset the car , what is your opinion on this case and what would you suggest me to do ?:confused:

Hi,

I got the same trouble, I canceled the trouble memory (P0488) with my OBD reader and it never happened again since 17 000 km...
But I use this car on highway very often and this clean the egr valve.

Regards

Hi chaps they are on the back on the right hand side of the block. Near the corrugated metal pipe.

They are held in by 2 torch bolts (t25 I think), cleaned mine yesterday.

Hope
It helps
Mike

I had a similar issue, I tried to change the EGR but this wasn't the cause. Turned out it was the timing, get it checked asap as mine has been very smoky since, which I reckon was because I was forced to drive it for a week in it's state...

Hi mate.
Had the same problem a while ago.
turned out to be a Vacum leak on the air intake to the turbo.
Might be at turbo presseure sensor in case its not a leak.
but take it to an independent garage and se which trouble codes they find.

I'm having that problem too. Changed the MAF, Changed the fuel filter, (that actually made it worse), cleaned out the EGR valve, and it' still does it. I'm at a loss what to do with it. Been on a diagnostic and no codes came up.
It was remapped a couple of years ago, but it's only been doing this for the last 12 months. It is worth getting un-mapped?

I had similar trouble with a Golf (AVOID at all costs)

I was advised by a knowledgeable VW technician to try a good fuel cleaning additive. It was suggested that carbon / gunge can build up and prevent variable vanes moving to the extent required leading to discrepancy in air pressures with engine sensors that causes the car to self protect. I agree it sounds as if the turbo is basically sound, but these things do spin at over 100,000 rpm so they do eventually wear and this can also cause a problem.

If it were me again, I would

Get OBDC diagnosis and get someone to plug in a data logger to see what is going on when it goes into limp home mode.

Get some good carb cleaner and spray the air intake.

Try a fuel cleaner for a couple of tanks and maybe one of these fuel treatments (c. 100Euro)

If this doesnt work bite the bullet and get a recon turbo or you could end up throwing a lot of money down the drain trying to rectify this. I never got to the bottom of my problem but my independent VW guy said the car was boosting at over 99% of the required pressure but still kept sensing under boost. --- Was this the start of the VW cheating engine management software scandal I wonder.---

I am now somewhat suspicious of variable vane geometry turbo's.

I do wish you good luck with the problem
