Hi folks- needed your help please - I have a fiat bravo 07 plate 1.9 diesel - had it just over a year.

When turning the ignition key, the engine will sometimes take a long while before it actually starts. You can hear it trying for a while (10 seconds) before it finally does and then if it had been going for a while you notice quite a bit of white smoke rising from the exhaust. Sometimes the engine wont start at all and so you have to turn back the key to off, give it 5 seconds and try again and then it will start. Its never not started at all.
Sometimes it doesnt do this at all and will start normally. This may happen less when the car has recently been used but not necessarily always only from cold.

I always make sure that the glow plug light turns off before turning the ignition key any further.

Just to mention, I had the glow plugs changed 6months ago because the error code came on but that made no difference (it was the same before). The battery was checked and is fine. Recently had its MOT and passed with no advisories.

Any ideas? I'm not very car literate so would appreciate any advice

First post here so go easy on me! :)

First thing, try waiting 2 seconds AFTER the glowplug light goes out before trying to start the engine. This gives time for the fuel pressure to be high enough. If you have the radio and aircon fan off, you may hear the whine of the fuel pump stop.

Second, if that doesn't help, get the glowplug relay checked.
