Hello All,

A few months back I posted a post about the cruise control not working in 5th gear and only 5th.

Anyway. After a friend of mine lending me his portable garage diagnostic software we were able to do some 'live' runs on the motorway and found that the ECU reads that the car is in 3rd, then upto 4th but when it changes to 5th - for a split second registers 5th gear but then drops to 'N' (even though the car is still in 5th) hence the reason the cruise won't activate in that gear.

So my question to you all now is...

Is there a gear position sensor? If so where? (I'm hoping its not in the box itself)

Chris

I thought that there was not a gear position sensor, except to detect reverse. I thought it was deduced from the relationship between road speed and engine revs.

If you have the car in 3rd or 4th gear, with your foot on the clutch, does it still tell you what gear you are in?

Hi Neil,

Yes when the clutch is depressed it still reads 3rd or 4th. Now interestingly, if I pop my clutch half way down in 5th - it reads it's in 5th!!??

So now i'm even more confused! Haha. Could be something to do with clutch, or clutch switch maybe.

Yes gears are calculated.

Probably you have a bad clutch switch or you need to calibrate it again.
