Hi,
I have a 2008 120 1.6 multijet, has 160 k miles and recently started having a very weird problem.
When accelerating, usually the 2nd and 3rd gear hesitates for very shortly ( less than a second ) when looses the power and recovers back immediately. When this happens there is a noise ( similar to a blow off valve) but the car doesn't have one ( at least none I am aware of)
The engine does smoke time to time and when it starts smoking, would drop mpg to 33, still pulls fine, however you can notice a slight lose of power.

It's my first time on the forum and I'm really happy that I registered. Plenty of information, however I couldn't find anything about the egr for the 1.6 multijet.

Hi Sergio
I think you have to connect the FES in order to find out weather you have or not some faulty sensor. Maybe the problem could be at MAF sensor. I think you can do an easy test, unpluging the conector to MAF, just for testing.

Also the MAP sensor or the EGR valve could be the problem.

Regards

Hi, thanks so much for the reply.

Well, so far I've don this. Replaced the O2 sensor as it popped up a check engine light. After spending £120 the problem is still there.

Since then the engine developed a very bad problem. After driving a while, even if it hasn't reached the temperature, the cooling fan will start and then the engine will start blowing tones of smoke. The smoke is a dark grey / blueish color. I did a lot of research to find out what this could be as there is no engine light what so ever.

Then I plugged the OBD and I turned on the live monitoring, got a friend to hold the laptop and went for a ride.

Every time the engine starts smoking, the EGR valve is standing still at the 0% position.

Now, I don't know if it is possible that the EGR will work for a while and then will get stuck. I took the EGR out before I did that test and it is all clean. It's either that previous owner cleaned the EGR already or maybe it's something else gone wrong.

It is such a pain as I really love this car and when it's working all fine it's brilliant. I would get easily 50mpg in town, however when this happens and blows tones of smoke the mpg drops to like 20.

Also, there is a strong smell of diesel.

Sorry for the loooong text, but I'm getting nuts with this problem.

Hi Sergio

According to my understanding the EGR valve must be closed when the engine is idling, cold or full load. In other cases the EGR valve must be opened a bit.
Maybe the EGR is faulty.
Were you able to remove the EGR valve in a 1.6 mjet engine? It is very hide and unaccesible.

Regards

That was hell of job removing the EGR, but I think it took me a lot more to figure out where it's located as there's nothing on the internet really. I had to remove quite a lot to get access to it. Pretty much everything in this engine has very complicated access.

Do you think the EGR could be faulty when it gets hot and not cause any check engine light?

I understand that if the EGR doesn't open when it should, will cause the engine to get really hot which could cause the fans to turn on.
This usually happens when I'm in traffic and I'm either cruising at a certain speed or when I reach the light and I stop...few seconds after the problems appears.

What I can't understand is that I could drive the car for a whole day with no problem and another day will smoke all the time.

I don't believe the engine is damaged as when it works fine and doesn't smoke, pulls very well and will do just the right MPG.

I did this as well on the motorway and still no improvement. I even checked the PCV valve breather as I found some oil in the air intake. Cleaned that but it still does the same problem.

Whatever it is, it doesn't cause a check engine light.

EGR could be faulty spite of not lighting any indicator in the dashboard. However I don't understand why fans start working.... It is very odd. It sounds like a regeneration on The FAP as neilshep said before.
If you didn't change the EGR so far, with more than 160k miles.... I would say this is the problem but I am not a mechanic....just an amateur.
I would like to remove the EGR. Could you please explain me how did you do it?. Thanks a lot.

Sure I will. I'm waiting now for the new EGR. It's supposed to arrive today, however they called me and said it could arrive on Monday.

How about if when I swap the new EGR I will either like film it or take pictures and show you where it is.

Other wise, the valve is located at the back of the engine, very low slightly toward the right side of the engine as you're facing the front of the car. It's hold by two screws, one of these odd hex. I't very tight space and the connector is quite hard to unplug in the first place ( mine was )

In order to reach there you take off the air intake and the throttle body. It's not very hard but you do need some patience.

Then you need to pull the valve out as there is a part of the actual valve that goes in the engine.

You kinda' need to lean over the engine to reach with both hands.

I'll take some pictures with what tools I use when I get the new EGR.

It's only normal tools, nothing fancy.

Thank you so much indeed, Sergio. I had located the valve but I was not sure about what do I have to remove it previously.
The pics will be very useful because there is no info about it on internet for this engine.
I wish your issue is solved after changing the EGR.

Cheers, I'll keep you up to date and send you pics as soon as I get it replaced.

Any chance you could post the pics? Sorry to bring up an old thread, thanks.
