So my 1.9 150bhp multyjet diesel (57 plate) has a serious problem...
It is very sluggish and has lost its power from acceleration and every time I change gear and then press the accelerator a cloud of black smoke comes out the exhaust.
I think this is my fault as I was driving on empty and the **** from my tank has been pulled up,
At first I was convinced it was an injector problem so I went to a garage for some advice and being I have no engine warning light coming on they suggest it may be the fuel filter ??
So what do u recon...... Fuel filter or blocked injector ???

Thanks

Hi, and welcome:)

sounds like it's over fuelling,
any service history to indicate when things were last changed..?

LOTS of options really..,
including EGR , Intercooler as well as conventional FUEL system -

however blocked filter or injector would REDUCE fuel supply,;)

TBH , change the under bonnet fuel filter cartridge,( fill it with Forte Diesel treatment),
then go for a good long drive to get everything HOT

Cheers Charlie..
Is this the part number for the correct filter I should be getting ??

EFF156

£20.00 on amazon for a comline filter

Thanks

Thanks again Charlie.

Two more questions...

1. Should I change anything else at the same time as a new fuel filter?
2. How easy or hard is the filter to change?

Allan

Pretty straightforward for anyone with a modicum of DIY skills. One tip - fill the filter with fresh diesel before connecting it up. Makes it much easier for the engine to prime it when you start up.

Diesel fuel.. OR Forte system treatment;)

you want a diesel compatible fluid in there to help expel AIR from the system,(y)

the Forte will clean + flush as it goes through the whole fuel side..,:)

at least with a clean filter.., you know that was / wasn't the issue, ;)

cheers again. I have ordered he filter as my car is getting worse and worse, I pitty the cars behind me catching all my smoke...lol
it feels like driving with handbrake 1/4 way on as im used to the power of the car

The loss of power and speed is unbelievable now, I'm lucky to get 60mph and the black smoke is getting worse...
Will anything else in the engine get effected the longer I drive the car before it gets fixed

Another possible fault is the MAF/map sensor, the wastegate solenoid valve...

Get MES/examiner on it and check the mentioned sensors parameters.

well I changed the fuel filter as suggested and instantly the car improved my 75%
I also filled the remaining 1/2 tank of diesel I had with "premium" diesel from esso and added a full container of wyns injector cleaner.

Its still smoking but not 1/2 as much as it was
The only problem I still have "apart from the black smoke" is that there is a flat/slow spot on the initial acceleration and the new fuel filter is sounding like air is being dragged in..... Is this natural ?

Does anybody think the cars performance will improve and the smoke will fade away as I have to drive 2.5 hours sunday morning to Bristol airport??
