I know what some of you think about shark fin antennas and so do I, but when I saw this one popup on ali express, I ordered it and it's pretty good quality as it turns out so I'll be installing it.

It's an antenna designed to go over the standard base and has a small coil that screws into it for radio reception. It's designed for bravo so it matched even my rare color.

It cost me $12.5 with shipping icluded.

Attached some pics. sorry for the dirty car, I don't wash it when it rains :)

That looks ace. Was looking for one of these a while ago. I see they also have it in grey, might be tempted.

Is the reception for the radio about the same as the standard aerial?

I didn't install it yet since I have to get the car cleaned up and take my time to put everything right... that heavy duty 3M tape won't allow for a second chance :D

I'll let you know about reception but personally, I really don't care about FM radio, I have internet radio and mp3's taking care of my ICE.

The performance of a short antenna will always be worse than a long one at the same frequency assuming that they are both designed for that frequency. A simple coil of wire will be a worse antenna than a whip made of a similar length of straight wire as was wound into the coil. Proper "shark fin" antennas normally have an internal amplifier.
I find it amusing that you can buy a working GPS antenna for less than a stick on dummy. I guess it's because you have to drill a hole to fit the real one

It's normal to expect the reception to be worse, but, as he said, he doesn't use the radio and not many people really do. I like how it looks and it looks better than the stock antenna anyway. I'd have bought it for my bravo tbh but she's now in a better place.

Reckon this one will be any better? Says it is amplified.

I like the look of shark fin antennas but I use my radio and don't want to loose signal quality.

i dont know about the one you linked to. the wiring is clearly different from mine.
i personally wouldnt buy it as the ebay page is very low on detail and it looks like you have to completely remove the standard antenna base which is no small task. mine took ten seconds to install.

After installing it I can tell you that the radio reception is exactly the same as with the standard antenna.

I've just installed mine today and I can say that it looks great. However, it does not work at all for the radio. It can't even find the channels that are saved in my stereo.

I'm not really bothered as I use MP3s on a flash drive.
Tad-bravo, did you get a bolt and nut with yours? If so, can I just ask how you connected them to the base? I did you put the nut between the loop and the base or between the loop and the bolt? I'm sure you'll know what I mean.

I can confirm 100% that the radio reception is exactly the same as with the standard antenna with mine.

I put the nut first and then the cable but I doubt changing the order makes any difference.

does yours looks like this?:

Tad, is the color exactly the same as your car's? From the pictures it looks like it is a bit off, but it may be the light (or the dirt on the car :D).

I am ordering one of these too, but knowing how hard is to match white color, I may go for the black gloss option. It will go well with the black Skydome.

I realized that the part where the antenna's located on my car is right on top of the glass but i had already ordered the color coded one.
At the end i'm very happy with it and the color is close enough:

the black will look great witht he skydome, it will be almost invisible.

but for the price, if I had to order again, I'd order a black and a colored one just to have the choice.

I ordered one of these too. Looks good but the signal travelling back down south was terrible! :(
Such a shame.
I would happily pay for professional installation of an amplified shark fin but I cant find anywhere to do it.

Yeh it looks identical to yours apart from the colour. As stated before, my radio reception is now zero. It doesn't really matter to me though.
