Hi All,

Been a while since I posted here. I've got a potential issue that I cannot for the life of me diagnose or get anyone to diagnose for me.

Sat in my car, driving along when suddenly this quite loud noise starting coming from what sounded like around where the gearbox is.
The noise itself is sort of hard to describe, it's like a clunking noise spinning? Like a grinding noise but not a grinding noise (if that makes sense, on off on off on off... etc) Anyway it isn't a healthy sound, I drove around for a while towards my local garage, pulled over turned off and then back on (what a mistake) as since earlier I can't get it to come back.

I have however noticed going up a steep hill or underload you can kind of hear the underlying tone of it trying to come back... It's almost like something is loose or broken.

This may be linked to about a week ago, under heavy acceleration in 4th/5th gear around 2000 revs around when the turbo is kicking in a very deep vibration suddenly was felt through the entire car and then it stopped...)

Not something I want to leave, as the garage couldnt replicate it they're a bit puzzled by my description lol.

It is to be said on occasion I give it it's fair share of a booting (Poor car, I indeed feel terrible lol)

Anyone have the slightest clue what this is? I'd film a video of the noise if I could!

do a search on M32 gearbox
and dont ignore it - if the bearing needs replacing there are companies than can do without dropping the box

could also be clutch/dual mass flywheel

I think you have a clutch slipping problem and not the gearbox itself.Or it could be the thrust bearing if the car does not pull or if there is a problem with the gears, than it is the clutch itself.Either way the best thing would be to replace the clutch. How old is the car? When you are at the stop sign or at the junction and you are stand still, do you keep your foot on the clutch or touching it or resting your foot on it?

thrust bearing

Is it a gearbox out jobbie. If the clutch went would it also cause damage to the gearbox?

No the gearbox itself stays, just a part of it is dismantled so to speak. If the clutch went it should not have caused damage to the gearbox, at leas usually it does not. You were asking about the strange noise, and that noise could be related to the thrust bearing. But since you have to open the part where the bearing is, it is not advisable to replace just the bearing and it is better to replace the clutch and the thrust bearing to avoid any further problems in the future. The six speed gearbox is usually non problematic, although some of the guys here think differently. But if you tune your car and if the car is chipped, reprogrammed and it produces higher torque than it does by the manufacturer standards, it can cause problems. PS: I found out that some of the guys call thrust bearing also as "throw out" bearing or throwout bearing.

On the previous post, look at the title page for the second video . You will see a shiny (worn) area to the centre of the clutch cover. This is wear on the spring (fingers) . On one clutch I had these fingers had been half worn through and the tips would have eventually broken off if I had not replaced the unit . Just a thought but could these have broken in your clutch?, they would make a bit of a jangly noise if they did. (My clutch had done 98K, mixed driving and no performance uprating, at the time of replacement.)
