Hi,

Does anyone know (or how to tell) which box is in the 1.9mjet 150?

Is it the M32 or the C635?

I'll looking to change the oil in it pretty soon.

You can't calculate like that...Your gearbox may fail tomorrow or it may outlive your car. I've read a lot about it and you can't really have any idea about the life expectancy. If you car is manufactured after 2010 it may actually have the uprated bearings.

After a bit of research here and on the Alfa forums I've ordered Redline gearbox oil from Opie:

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-74033-red-line-high-performance-synthetic-mt-85-75w85-gl-4-gear-oil.aspx

I've ordered 3 to be on the safe side and I know its a bit pricy, but I don't expect to need to change the gearbox oil again for several years!

I did exactly the same 1 month ago (same oil, same quantity) and waiting for a warmer day to replace the oil. :)

Of course good oil will contribute to keeping the gearbox in good shape. It's not the only factor, but everything counts. From everything I've read the original oil is too thin and that surely helps the bearings die earlier. Then it's your driving style, etc.

In all cases I tend to believe gearbox oil should be regularly replaced on any car, so you might as well put good stuff in it.

That's the common opinion on other forums - Opel's, Alfa's, etc. I'm not a specialist really, just thought I should replace my gearbox oil after 5 years of driving and Redline seems to have perfect reputation (being same thickness or not).

I was once told-change all liquids regularly, and you will never have problem. I do i like that for years, gearbox every 80 00km, break fluid and coolant every 2-3 years, engine oil 10000 km " old scool oil" and max 15000km or one year for those long life oils.

How is Tutela Matryx too thin?
It has same specification as Red Line.

Mu understanding is they changed the spec of it (or at least the one recommend for our cars) and it is now thinner.

Remember what you are paying for is the extra special ingredients (bit like premium fuel vs supermarket fuel) and Redline is meant to both smooth 'notchy' boxes and help protect more - especially under a hard load. Remember like all oils, gearbox oil also heats up...

Its just a pity they don't do a larger size of redline so need to order 3, but basically spending £60 rather than £20 to £40 on cheaper alternatives. Ultimately whats £30 over the course of several years? Basically its only half a tank of fuel these days
