Right fingers crossed I'm fitting number plate reverse camera tomorrow
Is there a easy location to get into boot to join phonos up or is it a drill job
Weather permitting

I've just done mine. No need to drill anything. Take off the inside boot trim and take out the spare tyre so you have plenty of room and can access the rubber thing where the existing wiring goes into the bumper.

I pulled it out, and cut a little slit so I could push the phonos through, then fitted it back in it's place. If you get your head under the bumper you can feed it through by hand. I had enough cable to keep the phonos in the boot to protect them from the elements.

Not sure what you're doing for power but my 'cam power out' from the head unit didn't work, so I've put an 'add a fuse' in and piggy back the rear wiper fuse. All working nicely, and cabling is tucked under the door runners.

I was going to connect to reverse lights

Flashing updates is easy. You either need to get into recovery (keep the power button pressed on mine), or the unit detects an update.img on your sd card and asks if you want to update. Once you're in recovery it's self explanatory.

I definitely agree on the 'if it ain't broke', so I've only updated to a point where I've gained the extra features I want. I'm on the modded KGL4 2.55 MCU, which includes sound improvements and the sleep timer, so I'm happy to stay there.

The only caveat is that I also needed to flash an android rom that had the sleep timer updates to make use of the updated MCU, which I don't believe KGL do.

Theerfore I went for a rooted JY stock rom from the huifei server link I posted, with added tweaks included to give extra app storage and to allow tomtom to work. Fully stock roms are also available on the server.

I haven't used Viper4android but I've changed the inbuilt EQ to my liking anyway.

When you flashed your head unit did you lose any installed apps on it?
Or is it like when you update your phone, all settings n stuff are kept?

And are the sound improvements noticeable?

I've worked out the recovery mode with the help of your description. Thanks :)

I've been using a sat nav app called iGo. It came pre installed and it's surprisingly good!

Unless you are flashing the same rom or an update to that rom, you need to do a wipe in most cases, meaning you will lose your apps.

iGo also came on mine, but the maps were pretty outdated so I've since got tomtom. However if you want to keep iGo, see if you can find the map folder and back that up just in case. The stock based roms on the Huifei server tend to have an "OEM" app which has iGo in there ready to install again if needed.

As for the sound improvements, I'm sure they're there but I don't remember it sounding bad before once I'd set the EQ. I was more interested in getting the sleep timer function.

I don't really wanna lose anything but it's not the end of the world, and I can't resist tinkering!
Probably going to have a go at the weekend. Plus I wouldn't mind Tom Tom.
What is the sleep timer function for?

All part and parcel of Android, I've lost count of how many times I've had to start over due to tinkering, but I still love it.

Notice how the head unit has to boot from scratch every time you turn the key? The sleep timer allows you to set intervals up to a max of 2 hours where the unit will be in a sleep state and wake up, rather than boot up, if you've left the car for a short time.

Depending on your unit you may already have that function if you've bought it recently. It'll be in your settings menu.

I don't have that feature as standard and it actually is one of those small annoyances.
Like if I just pop into the shop, when I start the car again it goes through the boot cycle.

It would be a good upgrade.

I think I'm going to have a go at the weekend.

The update went well. Mostly anyway! I didn't break it! :D
Android definitely updated. The other small .img file I'm not sure what happened lol. A lot of yellow text came up on screen so fast I couldn't read it but then it rebooted and worked as before, so I'm taking that as it going well.

Since the updates.... well I actually prefer how the old version looked and felt. It was more customizable. I can't get rid of the clock on the left now. Before, I could move and delete any widgets.
Also the head unit LEDs only light up when the car lights are turned on now. Before, they turned on with the engine. In the settings, where you choose the colour of the LEDs is now way off. I had to select 90% blue for it to display Orange. Weird one :/

Also the sleep timer function. I've not figured that out yet. Probably somewhere in the settings but I didn't spot it. I'll have to have another look.

I transferred all my apps to the SD card before I updated. I was hoping it would be as simple as putting the SD card back in after the update and system would recognise them. Turns out, its not that simply lol. As I couldn't find 'Rocket Player' my preferred Android music player.

Yeh sounds like it worked. If you get the MCU wrong your physical buttons will be messed up.

Download a new launcher and set is as default, that will get your customisability back. I use Nova Launcher as it's pretty much stock android and a clean slate.

I had the same thing with the colours, I think it was a side effect of using a different brand ROM, but at least it only needs setting once.

The lights coming on with the headlights is actually the correct behaviour as far as I'm aware.

Which ROM and MCU did you go for? I used JY as it looked the newest, but have now realised it doesn't have the 'Extra Settings' to do the sleep timer. Luckily for me though it still seems to work, probably because of the MCU and/or the setting I had on the previous rom may have stuck.

Unlucky about the apps. Titanium backup up is probably more reliable. TomTom is a pain though, you always have to download the map again. No side loading.

The MCU I used is
KGL v.2.55 with sleep and redesigned sound processor from darkleo - MCU_KGL_2.55_Sleep_Musik.rar

and the Rom I also picked JY, the top one in the list of 4. Rooted but it turns out, like you say, it does not have the sleep timer function. I was looking forward to that feature so I may try a couple of the other ones considering how surprisingly easy it was to flash.

Good shout with the Nova launcher! Very good customisation. I can control pretty much every aspect of the dash. I love it! The only ting I have noticed.... when using Nova, the reverse camera video is not as smooth. Real jerky, like a its lost about 10 frames per second.

I'm not sure about TomTom, is it worth the hassle? I was reading a thread where people were having problems and I'm not even sure what side loading is although I've seen it mentioned a few times.
Think I'll stick with iGo for offline as it has never let me down and Google Maps for when the very temperamental 3G Dongle decides to work.

Also I found out how to get the head unit lights on with engine start instead of the headlights if your interested. Go to factory settings (passcode 126) then just tick a box labelled 'key light' then press apply.
Also my open door graphic was mixed up. It would show the left door been open when it was actually the right door and vice versa.
In the same menu just tick a box called 'rudder' and apply. Fixed! :)

Sorted looks like you're getting there. The KLD Rom definitely has the sleep timer so try that one.

I didn't realise it was nova doing that to the camera! I just thought that's how it was. I'll try some others.

Oh yeh I remember the revelation when I found out about rudder. Slowly all of the minor annoyances were getting worked out.

Just stuck KLD unbranded(?) Rom on. This one looks identical to my original. Which I didn't mind.
All the roms I have tried have had a different UI. This one is the best so far but I may go through them all to find out which I like best since Nova makes the camera stutter.
If you find a good launcher that doesn't, please let me know :)
I'll leave a message to say which ROM I like best.

I found 'Extra Settings' for the sleep timer function. I then realised I did actually have it on my original rom. I just didn't know what it actually did. I can't remember what the setting is called now but its name didn't describe what its function is very well so I had no idea and ignored it.
I must of had it on the lowest setting (30 seconds) so I had never noticed it work.

Do you know if I can root a rom myself once installed?
I've found one I like (nice UI, + sleep timer function) but it is not rooted.
I need root to be able to install Viper4Android.

No I don't think you can on 4.4 unless king root or something works. If you know how to open a Rom up and put super user in yourself I think that's how they've been done so far.

Re the reverse cam, I'm not sure mine is affected by nova as it seems the same with the stock launcher. It's not silky smooth but seems OK. I'm not sure how it would be affected though as the reverse cam works independent of android i.e. when it's booting up

Hello all, I'm posting on these forums for the first time. Great advice and knowledge here!

I have the topics head unit and it is working great. Installing was easy too, plug and play with everything functioning as they should including steering wheel controls.
I also got the rear view camera that has been linked here many times.
I am having trouble installing the camera. I have placed it above the number plate and I ran the wiring into the boot. At this point I decided to test the camera before running the wiring up to the front. I connected the camera leads to the connector that came with the head unit. When I put the car in reverse, it says "no video input" on the black screen with the grid on it. I read here that the power leads for the camera from the head unit may not work so I connected them to a 12V plug and tried that way but that didn't help. Is my camera broken or do I have a wrong type of connector on the head unit?
I attached some pictures to this post to help solve this. Why does my camera video lead (black with yellow connectors) have those red wires on both ends? And is the camera connector looking same as everyone elses?
Thank you very much in advance! (y)
