I am the proud owner of a new (to me) Bravo 1.6 105 Multijet Active (59 plate, 43,000 miles). Having picked it up on Thursday, I've done 450 miles over the Easter weekend, and I think I like it a lot. However, there are a couple of things that are troubling me:

1) There seems to be a 'whining' in 3rd and sometimes 4th gears. It could be there in 5th or 6th, but other noises drown it out. There is no vibration or play in the gear leaver, and there seems to be no difficulty changing gear. Also, I don't believe this model has the M32 gearbox fitted (deliberately avoided). Does anybody know of any gearbox problems with these models, or any suggestions of what else it could be?

2) Performance and economy were both great (450 miles of £45 of diesel) but the background noise of the engine seemed a little 'rough' - tinny maybe? I am only used to much larger engined diesels. Is this normal?

Cheers.

That's interesting, Cultural Baggage, because my Bravo (known as a Ritmo here in Australia) has a similar whining sound. The car is a 2007 1.4 T-jet (different motor to yours). The whining rises and falls according to the speed the car is rolling; changing gear or revving the motor doesn't affect it. Even putting the car into neutral and coasting along doesn't change the sound. Is yours the same?

Our car has done 20,000km since we bought it, and the odometer is now at 80,000 km. During all this time the whine has been noticeable, but not too annoying. I've mentioned it to our mechanic, and he didn't know what to make of it. I asked him to check wheel bearings, but he said they were fine.

Anyway, it doesn't seem to have gotten any worse, so I guess we'll just live with it. :)

It's at the bottom right, by 6th. Does that make a difference?

@ Zigzag, I'm not sure our symptoms are the same, the whine isn't there in 1st or second, and only seems to be under acceleration. I'm trying to pinpoint it further, and will listen extra hard tomorrow, but it does seem like we might have a different issue.

Cheers both.

@CulturalBaggae - it does sound like we have different problems. FWIW, my reverse gear position is to the left of 1st.
