I was driving home this evening when about 3 minutes into the journey the engine light came on and screen read "check engine". The car drove perfectly fine and got home (25 miles mainly on dual carriageway and motorway) without a problem however I noticed that the fan was on what sounded like full power when I stopped to make a drop off half way. I notice this every now and then when I come off the motorway and stop at lights etc.

I know it could be any number of things but is there a list of common problems it could be that I should know off before I go to the garage in Monday morning?

The car is a 2.0 Multijet 165, I understand that this has a DPF fitted but the light has never come on since I've owned it as it does week day motorway mileage, commuting 250 miles a week plus weekend use so ideal mileage for a car with a DPF.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to get someone to read the error codes.

I seem to remember that the diesel Bravos can flag up an error if the oil has deteriorated too far, it could be that (fingers crossed as it's a relatively cheap fix)

Good luck

Thanks, it had a service and oil change only 5 months / 7000 miles ago. Would it deteriorate that quickly? I checked to make sure the garage reset the degregation reading, they showed me when it was plugged in.

UPDATE - I had my breakdown provider come out this morning. He said the car is running fine and suggested the EGR valve may be blocked as it is a common thing for the Multijet engines. He wasn't able to plug it in as his kit wasn't working! He suggested a run up the motorway 30 miles or so and come back. Not sure if this is good advice or not but I have driven up the M3 to Basingstoke which is 30 odd miles. The technician disconnected the battery so now my windows down auto wind up, hill holder is unavailable and ESP was unavailable for a while.

I got austenw90 to pop round and see me.

There were two error codes on his car (he has the specific error code numbers details).

1st code was basically the lambda sensor being low (EML turned on)
2nd code was battery disconnect, which we know about anyway

Against the 1st error code although the EML was still on the auxilary data/info said that (from memory so not precise) "an unexpect low signal was received from lambda sensor 1. Fault is no longer present".

I reset the fault codes and the EML went out.

I then monitored & graphed the Lambda Sensor Voltage signal and the Lambda Oxygen Concentration level and both tracked each other (after sensor warm up which take about 30 seconds). Tracking at idle, reving, 3k rpm etc.

With a little bit of luck this error was just some odd transient/glitch. Time will tell but there was certainly nothing seriously dangerous for the engine.

If the problem reoccurs than I was pleased to see that on the 2.0L Bravo the lambda sensor is easily accessible as is its connector.

If the fault occurs again (I did inspect the wiring but did not undo the connector) then I would

1) undo connector and check for crud / corrosion
2) remove lambda sensor and check for rust/corrosion in and around the treads

Fix above as required.

If problem still occurs then a new lambda sensor is probably on the cards.

Sorry for the Hijack.

Can anyone tell me where the diagnostic port in the Bravo is?

Thanks to s130 I can tell you. It is behind the small storage space just below and to the side of the steering wheel. In a RHD to the right of the wheel. On a LHD to the left. Between the knee level airbag and drivers door.nThere is a small screw holding this in place which is in the top of the inside of the storage area. It then simply pulls down a little and the connection port is in the space behind. Be careful not to over tighten the screw when you do it back up.
