Hi All,

I am just changing my turbo on my 2007 Fiat Bravo 1.9 m-jet 150. The turbo is with Midland Turbo to be repaired (seized exhaust side fan, snapped shaft and messed up the air intake fan)

They have told me the turbo failure was down to oil starvation and there seams to be allot of carbon build up on the exhaust side.

This is were I need a little help.

When I took the oil feed pipe off there was oil in the pipe and the turbo was full of oil (also it was sucking oil into the exhaust and smoking) so I know oil is getting there. Is there anyway of checking if enough oil is getting there?

Also what could be the cause of carbon build up? Poor running etc?

The car has 102k miles and was a company car and well maintained.

Is there anything else I should look at before putting the turbo back on and hoping it works?

Many thanks

Michael

Hi,

I think there wouldn't be enough oil pressure in the turbo.. because some of the oil was leaking in the exhaust .and that would cause carbon buildup.

..still worth checking the oil pressure ..i think garages should have a oil pressure gauge.

That's what I thought and after talking to the turbo guys they said it could also be that but I will still try and get checked.

What are the chances of the oil pump packing up?

Thanks Michael

There is a link to the Alfa owner forum where there is a PDF which shows exactly what to do. It's not hidden atall and take 10-20 mins to get off if that. (y)

Hi there

I found it, I was looking at the heat exchange for the egr

Did not get round to cleaning it tonight, that's on the list for tomorrow.

I did however manage to get the new turbo all fitted and tested. Let the engine idle for about 5 or so mins and checked for leaks and all good.

Then a rev'd it a little and still pleanty of smoke. Burning the rest of the oil off.
Let it idle again, mainly to let the street clear of smoke.

But then it went a little mad, I rev'd it again slight (about 1500rpm) and engine tone change from smooth ish engine to a very clatery endings and stared to increase it revs on its own. It started to calm down but by then I had turned it off.

Is this just the engine burning the oil instead of diesel?
I started it again and if was fine but did not rev if again.

Is this going to keep happening till and oil that's left is gone? And is it safe? Is it going to damage my new turbo.

Many thanks
Michael

Due to turbo failure, oil has now filled your bores
The revving on its own is evidence of this and before you do anything else, you need to remove injectors or glow plugs and turn the engine over to remove the oil

It's going to be messy so plenty of rags to cover engine bay

You need to be careful that the engine does not become hydrauliced which means that it is running on the oil in the bores

Once you have done this, change your oil and filter again and then take it for a run

It will continue to smoke as the exhaust will be full of oil and will need to burnt fully

In time it will settle down
Good luck

Hi all

Another night spent under the bonnet it is now all back togeather. Left the car running for about an hour, every now and then holding the revs at 2000 rpm for a few mins.

smoke starting the clear and the engine is deffently running better.

When i first fired it up it was lumpy and rough but now its smooth and responsive.

Took it for a quick drive (first time i have ever driven it) and its really nice, responsive and quick. Now i did not really take it above 2500 rpm but still felt it was quick enough and felt like the new turbo was working well.

Still go lots of oil to clear, when driving still heavy white / blue smoke but hopfuly it will get better.

Now the only thing thats on my mind is a slight ticking sound, sounds like it's coming from the top of the engine, just under the rocker cover. Any ideas what this could be and / or is it normal?

Many thanks
Michael

Heres a short video of hows it sounds.

You can just about hear it but in real like its more noticeable

14 psi of oil pressure required to run a turbo.Check the intake side of the turbo for debris from the knackered intake impellor.I.e all the intake trunking.Chances are the intake impellor was damaged before the cross shaft broke. Thus then being down on boost pressure, fuelling then ramped up to bring boost back in to spec leading to turbo over speed because of the increased exhaust gas and bang goes the cross shaft. Is the intake side 100% sealed?
